Montana (NZ) Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008
It seemed like a good time to take a look at this classic Sauvignon Blanc, which has been a permanent fixture on UK shelves for three decades now. As Montana prepares to celebrate the 30th anniversary of launching the very first Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in 1979, it also appears the gods have blessed them with the 2008 vintage: Australian magazine Winestate has awarded the wine a perfect five stars. The attractive elderflower and gently herbaceous nose is softened by passionfruit and lifted, tropical aromas with touches of lychee and even Turkish delight. On the palate the texture is quite rich and creamy, which helps to marry the bold, pungent flavours of gooseberry and green pepper with a succulent, tropical mid-palate and tangy grapefruit finish. Stylish and well-made, this is an excellent example of its style that’s widely available and moderately priced. £7.99, Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons
