Tom Cannavan

Tom Cannavan is the Louis Roederer International Online Wine Writer of the Year 2008. A Scottish wine writer and journalist, Tom was one of the pioneers of wine on the Internet, having published wine-pages.com since 1995, making it one of the world's longest-running - and most popular - wine sites.

After graduating from Glasgow School of Art, Tom had a career as a teacher and lecturer, in schools and then the University of Glasgow. Throughout this time, Tom's passion for wine was undiminished, and he began writing food and wine articles for newspapers and magazines in the early 1990s.

A few years after the launch of wine-pages, Tom gave up his University job to concentrate on full-time wine writing. Publishing, editing and writing for wine-pages remains Tom's passion, but he continues to write about wine and food in print: he is wine columnist for I-On Glasgow and I-On Edinburgh magazines, and writes for consumer and trade publications including World of Fine Wine, Decanter, Harpers and Off Licence News. Tom's work has also appeared in The Sunday Times and The Independent, and he occasionally appears on BBC radio and on television.

Tom has written or contributed to 10 wine books, including the annual Wine Report, the Which? Wine Guide and the Good Web Guide to Wine.

Tom is also an experienced international wine judge, having judged some of the word's most prestigious wine competitions on three continents, including competitions in Australia, Chile, Argentina, France, Germany, Georgia and the UK. He is also much in demand as a public speaker and hosts fun wine tastings, quizzes and entertainment events for corporate clients.

In 2004 Tom launched sister title beer-pages.com with Contributing Editor Roger Protz, and in 2006 he launched whisky-pages.com with Contributing Editor Gavin D Smith to complete his portfolio of online drinks titles.

Tom says he has catholic tastes and 'enjoys all fine wines, especially with good food and good company,' and adds: 'What I really love about wine is that it is so endlessly fascinating and constantly re-newing itself.'
