(2022) From Alicante, this is 50% Monastrell, aka Mourvèdre, along with 50% Giro (a local name for Grenache). It was aged 10 months in 500-litre Allier oak barrels. Really nice and ripe, up-front red fruitiness on the nose, a certain energy and life about this. The palate follows on a similar vein, red liquorice edging blueberry and damson plum for a certain succulence and nicely weighted tannins and acids into the finish. Good value.
(2016) From Alicante on the southeast Spanish coast, this is made from Monastrell, aka Mourvèdre, and is a glorious big mouthful of sunny 14.5% alcohol red. It's a special parcel in Majestic in Autumn 2016, so there is limited stock, and its price falls to £7.99 if you are buying a mixed six. It's loaded with kirsch-like, cherry lift and red plum juiciness, a twist of smokiness and liquorice too. On the palate it is full and silky textured, a chocolaty density and the plush fruit supple across the mid-palate. Watch the video for more information and food matching ideas.
(2007) Monastrell, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is made from younger vines that Juan Carlos has planted, and it spends a few months in older barrels, with a “second wine†philosophy of allowing fruit selection for the El Sequé first wine. Very dark crimson/black colour with a hint of violet, with a very pure schist and raspberry fruit character. Good dark, raisiny concentration of fruit, and onto the palate this is stylish and supple, with rich, jammy fruit, but also a bit of chocolate and plum coming through in a very silky, suede-like finish.
(2007) Very dark and dense all the way to the rim. Dark, chocolaty and blueberry aromas, with plum and damson fruit, and still some cherryish vibrancy. There's a note of briar and truffle just in the background. On the palate Very smooth and silky textured, with a smoky, polished old wood quality, and a very vibrant, palate filling concentration and sweetness of fruit. Supple, polished tannins begin to bit, and a really good acidity adds lots of structure. Really quite complex and chewy, but has refinement too.
