(2018) Well who'd have thought it? Pinot Noir from Portugal is highly unusual, this from Lisboa (formerly known as Estremadura), aged in a combination of French, American and Portuguese oak barrels. For Pinot lovers the search for affordable versions is always on, and this is a good little wine - indeed very good for its price: briarwood, roasted chestnut and some autumnal, woodland aromas join the red fruits, and the palate has juiciness and good balance. Even better, it's normal price of £8.99 is reduced to just £7.49 at time of review. Watch the video for more information and food-matching ideas.
(2011) Castelão, Aragonez, Tinta Miuda. Bright, focused, cherry-ripe and cola nose that burst with fruit, a little sappy Beaujolais-like note too. On the palate really focused and has masses of sweet fruit, gently flecked with spices and plum, but truly delicious, modern and bright stuff.
(2010) Dense, dark and liquoricy on the nose, this blend of various Portuguese grapes with a touch of Syrah has a serious, sinewy quality with edgy cherry and dark plum fruit, and a savoury, earthy appeal. On the palate it is firm and focused, with a lean, blackcurrant and olive seam running through the wine. This is the opposite of jammy, the edgy, savoury quality staying fresh and focused with juicy tannins and acidity and considerable length.
(2010) There's a certain delicacy, or rather, refinement about this wine, with its ripe strawberry and blackcurrant fruit quality and little note of herbal freshness. On the palate there's an intriguing broadening out: it maintains that juicy, sweet-fruited clarity, but a robust, chunky tannic framework adds a certain muscularity, with broad, oaky tannins too, though the freshness is maintained with very good acidity. A savoury and fresh, appetising wine this.
(2001) Distinctive nose; lots of wild herbs and charcoally quality, briar wood and bracken. Plenty of savoury cherry fruit. This has bold, sweet, and crunchy fruit on the palate with plenty of power and depth. Good character, and plenty of interest at the price, with the money off discount, a genuine bargain.
