(2021) From a unique Provence terroir on the Trévaresse volcano, winemaker Michel Fabre has made this wine from vineyards grown on soils composed of black rock, basalt and clay-limestone. The blend is Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the nose has a distinct floral lift, plenty of rose and violet, and a peach and passion fruit. There'salso a flinty touch that's quite Chablis-like somewhere in the mix. The palate is dry and vividly fruity, watermelon and pomegranate, with very food acidity that does show a mineral sense of the volcanic soils. No UK stockists listed at time of review.
(2021) A typically pale and attractive, peachy Provence, a blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Rolle and Clairette, from limestone and clay soils. The nose is attractively fruity and welcoming; a strawberry sundae character, with a tiny hint of leafy herbs. In the mouth there is abundant peaches and cream sweetness, more of that strawberry summer fruits character and nice texture as well as balancing acidity. Part of the Chapoutier Selection, it is very nicely done. Please note: price and stockist quoted at time of review is for the previous vintage.
(2021) The Society's first Provence rosé in the Exhibition range blends Cinsault and Grenache with a a little Syra. Very pale peach pink, it is perfumed with mineral salts, fowers and rose-hips, gentle summer berry fruit.In the mouth it is dry and delicate. There's enough peachiness to the fruit, a little strawberry, to make it very easy-going but the oranges and lemons acid really is well-judged. It's workaday bottle lacks the appeal of the fancy £15 and £20 brands, but the stuff inside is really very nice.
(2020) A delightful, dry Côtes de Provence rosé that's mostly Grenache with 25% Cinsault, 8% Syrah and 7% Carignan, the nose is crammed with small red berry fruits, cranberry and redcurrants, a touch of lemon rind too. Some lees contact in tank lends texture on the palate, and it is super dry and tangy-fresh, a real sense of citrus juiciness is mouth-watering, in a delicious and gastronomic rosé perfect with a salad Niçoise or seabass or bream. (2020) Come hither charms for this soft, pulpy red-fruited Provence pink, aromas of strawberry sunde, sherbet and watermelon and an appealing, very easy drinking palate with balanced acidity and a gentle finish. No UK retail listing at time of review.
(2020) Lots of zip and appealing brightness to this, a bit of lipsticky lift and bright red summer fruits: rosehips, strawberry and watermelon. In the mouth a nicely balanced wine, with that pulpy fresh red fruit tanginess persisting, a nice core of lemony acidity and pleasing dry, textured finish.
(2020) The Cronk family from England moved lock, stock and barrel to Provence in 2008 and quickly established Mirabeau with the assistance of Master of Wine, Angela Muir. In their beautifully presented range of rosés, Etoile is stocked by Sainsbury's in the UK, though Waitrose and many independent merchants stock other cuvées too. Very pale and pretty in colour, there's an exotic note on the nose, lychee and a touch of watercolour paintbox, and juicy ripe apple fruit. Lemony acidity - and fruit - balances that peachy and red berry fruit into an elegant finish. Watch the video for more information.
(2018) A lovely blend of 60% Grenache with Syrah from vineyards at 300-400m altitude, planted on clay and limestone soils, this is a most delicate and dry rosé, passion fruit and watermelon aromas touching into the tropical, a saline hint in the background. In the mouth that sweep of peach and grapefruit fresh but full fruit meets more delicate rose-hip, a lovely tart acid background pushing out the finish to a fine point.
(2018) An interesting and perhaps surprising new wine in the extensive Caves d'Esclans line-up, the subtle elegance of thier usual packaging his gone a bit tropical in this blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, which has a marginally deeper colour than the regular Whispering Angel bottling, and a little more ripe upfront fruit, even a whiff of banana before small red berry fruit. Dry and elegant in the finish, it is certainly distinct from the pale minerality of the Whispering Angel, but very good.
(2018) From an estate in Côtes de Provence, a typically pale and restrained rosé, watermellon and redcurrant aromas, a touch of zesty lemon. In the mouth it is dry and tangy, a touch of tangerine or bitter orange against the light red fruits and fresh citrus and salt acidity. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault is the blend.
