NWR What films have you been watching?

Just finished watch "Des", the dramatisation of serial killer Dennis Nilsen's arrest and trial. Rather fascinating drama, brilliantly acted with a strong cast and David Tennant as Nilsen was captivating (he even looked like Nilsen). I hadn't realised how much Nilsen was in control and controlling and Tennant conveyed that amazingly well.

For some reason I've never really 'got' David Tennent, but he was absolutely brilliant in this - chilling.
 
But I do concur with you. Perhaps its because I was not a great fan of the modern Dr Who series. I thought he was good in Broadchurch, but going through the motions in the American remake, Gracepoint, so much so we gave up after the first episode.
 
Another vote for "Eurovision" from us, superb, and the final is hilarious for its closeness to the real thing. A low key beauty for me recently was "Nobody knows I'm here'. Slow, nuanced, beautifully shot, and a real earworm song as the central theme.

Good recommendation Tom. Watched it last night. I can see the resemblance to No Country for Old Men.

The bizarre thing for me was how many non-American actors were in the film - mainly English, Australian and Swedish.
Including the guy who was Dudley from Harry Potter!!
 
An astonishingly good performance from Renée Zellweger as "Judy"...before my time, but the singer's terrible back story is well-known and I do remember her being on TV during that period (Sunday night at the London Palladium perhaps?). Well worth watching though it's unlikely to lift your spirits..
 
Watched Enola Holmes on Netflix lasst night with my 13-year-old daughter. We both really enjoyed it.

Another that we thoroughly enjoyed recently was 9. It's pretty light on story, but the aesthetic is just absolutely gorgeous. I can't recommend that one highly enough.

And finally one we wathced on DVD - The Kid Who Would be King. I really didn't expect to like that one, but we were both really drawn in by it. Another in a long line of King Arthur/Sword in the Stone-inspired movies but with a lot of humour and heart - and refreshingly 'real' actors rather than perfect little teen pin-ups.

Very good film if unremittingly bleak. Not sure if I’d recognise the chap who played Dudley in Harry Potter but the dodgy preacher was played by Robert Pattinson who played Cedric Diggory in one of the Potter films. Also recognised the chap who memorably played the psychiatrist Brick in an episode of Outnumbered.

+1 again. MBB is just brilliant, incredible screen presence for a 16 year old (and great for the very much in vogue fourth-wall-breaking). Casting inspired generally - having a big name Hollywood actor (Cavill) playing the big name character (Sherlock) whose role is peripheral was excellent (also Fiona Shaw, H B-C etc etc).
 
Finally got around to watching Sicario last night. The central plot line is rather over-egged, but the performances are excellent and the portrayal of the aftermath of the drug-related violence in Mexico is both eye-opening and gut-wrenching. It's one thing to read reports of mutilated corpses hanging from the underside of an overpass and another so see it depicted and confront the reality of it. The film's shot beautifully, and cleverly, too - a lot of thought went into the framing.

opening 20 mins or so is brilliant and scary as hell. Makes you think they need a wall on that border... :cool:
 
This weekend watched The Gentlemen (I think it was Tom who recommended it). Hugh Grant is brilliantly-sleazy in it.

Also watched again the brilliant and under-rated I, Tonya. The perfect balance between comedy and tragedy.

And my regular serving of Jonathan Meades .... he has a whole dedicated channel on Vimeo (search for Meades Shrine). Meades makes brilliant tv cut through with quite brilliant, dark humour. And words I cannot understand.
 
On a bit of a roll recently.

Last night watched (with my daughter) Pan's Labyrinth. She now wants her halloween costume to be the weird creature with eyeballs in his hands.

Then a really interesting film called Enemy with Jake Gyllenhall..... one of those films that when it ends you think "hmmm, erm, i might need to watch that again". Really good 2 hours spent actually.
