Homesense - Fine Wine!

No one (well almost no one) who walks into Homesense has any intention on spending £200 on anything, let alone a bottle of wine. I like homesense, it’s great for everyday wine glasses etc, but I’ve noticed that almost always when they get anything high end, it sits then is discounted, then is discounted again, so my advice would be hold fire and keep your eye on them, because one day they’ll be giving them away, they won’t care about the market price of Cheval Blanc etc they’ll just want rid of them.

Yes Kevin, I was thinking the same. I might pop back in a week or so and see if they’ve been reduced further.

People used to always have concerns about the storage conditions in supermarkets or Costco for fine wines that were sitting on the shelves, but the fact is those two probably have better aircon and a more streamlined supply chain than many small merchants. Of course they may not have the knowledge or sensibility to handle them carefully other than that.

In this case I guess the big doubt is over where they've been before HomeSense. I confess I've never been in a branch (though I have TK Maxx, usually looking for Riedels) but next time I'm back in Glasgow....

I recall seeing a bottle of 2005 Ch. Ducru Beaucaillou on display inside in a branch of Dan Murphy's in Katoomba a few yeas ago - for many hundreds of dollars of course - whose label was very clearly sun-faded. I wondered at the time who would know enough about wine to want to buy a wine such as that but so little about wine not to know that it was clearly going to be severely sub-par.

You'll need to go to Edinburgh Tom, Homesense don't have any branches in Glasgow.
