NWR new zero tolerance covid thread

That's a good point but who's to say precisely what symptoms you have? Plus if your symptoms are those of a vaccinated person with Covid (as you say) surely that list is out of date
The emergence of a mild cough prompted me to remember I still had a couple of mail-in PCR tests at home, so I took one. Negative, so it probably was a cold.

I've just found an anti-vax "people-funded paper" on my doorstep. It's called The Light and seems convinced that government Covid data are lies, PCR tests mostly false positives, the vaccine is part of "the great reset" to reduce population through infertility and therefore those refusing vaccination are a crucial "control group" who won't be infertile which will prove the "great reset" plot is real and lead to mass revolt.

Sprinkled between the anti-vax pieces are articles questioning anthropogenic climate change, bizarre grudge tirades and a training course for "Common Law Constables" which sounds like the starting point for some sort of US-style militia.

It includes quite a bit of content about governments using Covid to justify oppression outside the UK, mostly US but also France, Germany, Canada, Israel etc. and the term "globalists" is used which is a common alt-right term, often anti-semitically loaded.

It's quite a similar approach to the patchwork assemblages used in 9/11 conspiracy theories after 2001. Pick and mix things which look like evidence on the assumption that people are too busy, untrained or innoculated against counter-evidence to do the necessary checking, then sit back and wait for the book sales, clicks and course participants to come rolling in.

It's essentially an anglicised potage of the agenda now dominant in the Republican party which, just like the formerly sensible Conservative Party here, has lost its compass.

Presumably the newspaper format is intended to reach those who don't bother with social media.

It's interesting how those nudging us towards the destruction of liberty believe they are protecting us from forces which seek to deprive us of liberty. Humans often believe about others what they cannot bear to believe about themselves.

I wonder what "people-funded" really means.

I was actually pretty shocked to find this lying outside my door.

Tom, if any of this strays beyond the brief for the thread I'd be happy to fillet it.

Not sure why but France running at c. 1/4 the UK's # of new cases/day/100k population but over twice as many people in ICU. Seems very odd.
Dan: Could not find ICU numbers for UK. Total in ICU in France is 1959 of which 119 new (previous day)

France : 9144 new cases, less than 100/100000, 9555 total in hospital and 1959 in ICU, 452 new (day) admissions in hospital, and 119 new admissions in ICU and 80 deaths according to latest numbers
UK: 30597 new cases, 8140 total in hospital, ?? in ICU around 700 new admissions in hospital and 201 daily deaths from Guardian latest. Could only find admission in hospital not in ICU.

New cases can easily be affected by the testing numbers and criteria. Especially now with higher vaccine rates leading to less sever illnesses.
However, do we know how the vaccine rates compare.
I hear passports and mask wearing are common in France. Clearly not in the uk.

France is now ahead in vaccination rates (despite all the antivaxx. Positivity of tests is less than 100/100000. Mask wearing is compulsory in France, clearly not here.

Rather a threatening term, like 'the people's priorities', which certainly scares me.
I am a bit more conspiracy-loving (but probably not wrong in this case). When some activitists need to especially address that the movement is "people-funded", the funding most possibly is not mainly from common people. It is no secret that anti-vaxx/anti-mask/anti-restriction movement got support from right wing groups, and right wing groups got money from God-knows-where.

In Paris masking indoors and in the métro and on buses is mandatory and overwhelmingly followed (there are some -- maybe 5% or a little more -- who do the nose-hanging-over-the-mask thing), but overall I'm impressed by the compliance, which is comparable to San Francisco (also very mask compliant). Restaurants and museums require proof of vaccination, a negative test within 72 hours, or proof of covid infection within the past 6 months, and my experience here is that the rules are strictly followed (a few restaurants where I'm a regular might not have insisted if I didn't have the pass with me, but I always do).

I think the difference in France is not a more compliant culture but, because the French state is geared up for it, a willingness to police the rules. In London (because I can't speak for anywhere else in the UK), all rules have essentially been subject to no more pressure than 'moral suasion' - with the exception obviously of the travel restrictions since there's a pre-existing structure for checking compliance

It’s amazing how being in favour of civil liberties has become far right, whilst being in favour of state control & restrictions is deemed the centre ground. Has the centre ground become the far left?
Loving civil liberties is not the issue here, Dominic. Spreading misinformation (some are just plain lies) is. Whatever ground you are on, it has to be based on facts.

Quite probably so, Tom. I understand that fines here are high. But if you look at the pictures of the weekly demonstrations against the passe sanitaire, even though they take place outdoors, there is a fair percentage wearing masks.

The headlines are misleading - you no longer need to book as PCR test for taking on day 2 after you return, but you still have to do a test - lateral flow is acceptable.

You have not needed to do a PCR test before returning: lateral flow has been acceptable for that, at least for quite a while - and I think is still required.

From October 4, it appears you no longer need a pre-departure test of any kind, if you are fully vaccinated.
