10-11-12 September weekend drinking

SATURDAY NIGHT AT HOME WITH FRIENDS AND THAI TAKEAWAY - (12/09/2021)

  • 2019 Domaine Gachot-Monot Côte de Nuits Villages Les Chaillots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
Really lovely - balanced, vibrant red fruit, gorgeous mouthfeel - all too easy to drink. A proper wine, punching well above its weight. But a look at the bottle shows this weighs in at 14.5% - sheesh - glad I have this in halves. Will be interesting to see how well it ages...although I would be a little surprised if i don't drink through my case of halves in pretty short measure.
  • 2005 Château Poujeaux - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
Tasted in the interests of science following a pretty disappointing showing earlier in the week. This was lovely - full, still some fruit there but with some complexity - cedar box and pencil lead. Not wildly outperforming like some vintages of this wine, but jolly decent.

Interestingly, Simon G had wondered if there were some low level TCA in the previous bottle. I had thought not but this makes me wonder if he was in fact correct.

Sunday evening wine, brought a number of years ago, from an Italian collector who owned a Parma ham factory and stored his wines there. I think a couple of other forumites also grabbed some wines from this sale, they’ve given me a lot of pleasure over the years and helped show what aged Italian wines could be like, as well as introducing me to Radikon, Cantina Terlano, and Gianni Masciarelli among others
  • 2000 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Barolo Vigna d'la Roul - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (12/09/2021)
Decanted off the copious sediment about 3 hours before drinking, and it’s still opening up. It’s got a deep red core with bricking eating a cm into the wine. The nose has plenty going on, still some cherry fruit while it’s developing tertiary aromas and flavours, a bit leathery, some opulent spice, it’s floral in quite an intense way, a bit of chocolate, some heat is showing from the 14.5%. There’s some medium grain tannins showing still, I suspect they will still be there when the fruit has faded but with food they are unobtrusive. It’s a bigger boned Barolo, best suited for the table. It’s hard to see this improving more although it’s not going to keel over either.

Gosh, I had a half of this a few weeks ago. Hadn’t occurred to me to check the abv, so whilst it was plush it obviously didn’t strike me as hot or unbalanced. However, the rest of my stash is in full bottles o_O

We have spent the week in an all-inclusive, family friendly resort in Spain. Pre-kids, pre-COVID, this would have been anathema, but just now it has been perfect. They boast 300 wines on their lists, and we haven’t had anything bad, but nor have have we found anything better than good until today, when we discovered that there is Tatty Rose NV available literally everywhere in the resort but (for some reason) not listed. Repeated samples reveal it to be delicious, with plenty of strawberry, citrus (blood orange, pink grapefruit?) and a refreshing mineral streak. Chin chin.

Today was our 29th wedding anniversary and we had a lovely lunch at Wild Flor in Hove, a result of various recommendations from this site. I had not eaten there before but the food and service were exemplary. Not super flashy but a very well put together menu which offered a Sunday lunch which was just slightly more sophisticated. They also have a corkage policy which I found out after I phoned them. They were very welcoming of the wine which was a wonderful Domaine Jacques Carillon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles 2012 in just a brilliant place. As ever, I was concerned it would be poxed but not so, it's what fine white burgundy is when its on form and a delight. Citrus, crisp, good acidity and impeccable balance. As was the food and service I would highly recommend Wild Flor if you're close to Hove. I will return!!

Had friends over yesterday for drinks in the garden and takeaway. One of those evenings where the wines really sing.
  • NV Laherte Frères Champagne Rosé de Meunier Extra Brut - France, Champagne (9/11/2021)
Disgorged March 2020. A really fun wine that delivered a ton of up-front red-fruited pleasure. Wonderful balance of acidity, a touch of spice to add liveliness and a hint of oak for creaminess, refreshing and just-sophisicated-enough. Excellent. (92 pts.)
  • 2020 Domaine Saint André de Figuière Côtes de Provence Cuvée Magali - France, Provence, Côtes de Provence (9/11/2021)
Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and extremely young and pale pink. At first I found the 'Provence (TM)' nature of the nose a bit offputting (especially after the class of the rose Champagne that preceded it), and I couldn't help deprecating the fact the entire bottle was poured immediately into four large glasses, but it certainly grew on me, with a subtle creaminess and impeccable balance... and suddenly all four glasses were empty. (90 pts.)
  • 2017 Lismore Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Fermented - South Africa (9/11/2021)
Sam O'Keefe's magic touch strikes again! Really full-bodied and textural, with just the right amount of influence from oak and oxygen to coax delicious things from superbly ripe fruit. Just that bit too glossy to be from the Graves, but that's an interesting point of difference rather than anything pejorative. Aromatic enough to stand up to a spicy Chinese, and certainly made a big impression on everyone at the table. (93 pts.)
  • 2019 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/11/2021)
Suffered somewhat from following a punchy (and extremely successful) Sauvignon Blanc, but plenty of loveliness on offer here. Not particularly sweet, though with a good amount of extract to create a full-bodied feel. At this stage not particularly open on the nose, not much complexity on the palate, but oh-so-drinkable and with a silky finish that's full of minerality. (90 pts.)
  • 1994 Urbina Rioja Gran Reserva Especial - Spain, La Rioja, Rioja (9/11/2021)
Decanted for sediment (there wasn't much at all, as it turned out) and drunk over 2-3 hours. Obviously à point from the first sniff, with the musky, dill-picklish oak having melded into the slightly meaty fruit to create a wonderfully intoxicating perfume. Further complexity revealed with air: dark, sweet tobacco, leather, glacé cherry, sundried tomato. Excellent acidity on the palate from plentiful sour cherry fruit, with hints of Seville orange zest and more of that tobacco. Smooth finish, but this bottle could have gone another five years, maybe more. An excellent accompaniment to the US Open final. (94 pts.)

Then more decent wine today! Another Eric Guido recommendation that hit the spot.
  • 2015 Nino Franco Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Brut Grave di Stecca - Italy, Veneto, Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG (9/12/2021)
Chosen as suitable for afternoon tea with the in-laws, this was a pleasant surprise: lively, full of peaches and cream, with a dash of herbs and gingery spices, and a nice gauzy texture.

I let my wife think it was Champagne until she'd told me she really liked it :) (91 pts.)

In a field (Glasgow Green) from Thursday so mostly warmish expensive larger in a paper cup. Did manage one bottle of wine which at only 50p more than the larger. A simple 50/50 Cabernet merlot blend. Not going to set the world alight but pleasant.

2014 PYCM les Narvaux Meursault was on song in Le Petit Nice, Marseille. I thought it was glorious and drinking very well. Was planning to drink local to keep the bill down but the mark ups on the Bandol and Cassis wines looked quite hefty so more in hope than expectation looked at burgundy and found dauvissat and raveneau 1er cru chablis for about 100 euros and the Narvaux for 140.

Various bottles amongst provided by a few wine obsessives at my cousin's 12 month postponed ruby anniversary.
I sourced the Jaboulet '80 from a nearby on-line vendor who is reliable for museum wines. This was eminently drinkable, served blind bar declaring vintage, everyone guessed Burgundy. There was a separate release of La Chapelle.
The Musar '79 was creaking - supplied by a fellow Moose adherent. The Berton was new to me &an impressive drop. The Villeneuve was over the hill - the fruit having disappeared. The Lafaurie was a big surprise. Served blind (decanted) I was convinced it was Rieussec from a good year: it was fat, rich, powerful & belied the vintage. The no-label was decanted & then served. Once I changed from suggesting Shiraz, my guess was something from a left bank property, from a mature, weak vintage. I reckoned '87 & maybe Latour. Decent but nothing special, though I was grateful to try it. WoTD: the Eitelsbacher Auslese 2009 - shame it was my only bottle. Drink now & next 15 years.
