Dan, it's just PR bumph posted for fun, so definitely not to be taken too seriously. Apparently the figures are for January, based on finding from a payment processing company specialising in small businesses.

As with Tom King, I've probably accounted for most of my own city's increase. As for Dry January, Mike, from what I've been hearing (including positive noises from the retail side), I think you may well be right.

I think the absence of low-spending students (excepting the Bullingdon, obvs) has simply raised the average. The rest of the city apparently busy making vaccines.

I presume per transaction, and it is largely the result of a) Not being able to go to the pub b) People shopping less frequently so buying more per shop
