NWR Cover songs that are better than the original

How about Manfred Mann’s Earth Band- “Blinded by the Light”
Only found out that Bruce Springsteen wrote it recently when Radio WM played it and did the credit. It was on his first LP.
The proggy style is great. Must admit the lyrics are good. What happened to Curlywurlys?
One of the first songs on Countdown (Australian version of Top of The Flops) that I ever saw in colour. Who can fail to forget that thing they did with that new-fangled synthesiser thingy. You know, he turned the knob and a weird sound came out sounding like a theramin being strangled.

I reckon Manfred Mann’s Earth Band self-titled first LP is one of the very best records of the 1970s and still listen to it a lot. Fantastic covers of songs by Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, Dr John and others. There’s footage of them doing an extended workout of Captain Bobby Stout live in Stockholm I think which is one of the proggiest things I’ve ever seen.

Bruce Springsteen has a lot of fans, and whilst I don't think he is actually God like some do, I do own a smattering of his records. But it is interesting that people do seem to be able to do covers which are better than his own, such as the obvious "Because the Night". Likewise, I prefer Robert Wyatt's Shipbuilding to Costello's, though am I right in thinking that the originals in both cases were written for these artists?

That’s my understanding.
Dave Edmunds ‘Girls Talk’ is far better than Elvis’s ‘original’.

As I recalled correctly Elvis 'gave' this to DE, who released the first recorded version. Elvis later hid his version away as a B side to 'I Can't Stand Up etc'.
Having asked for an independent, objective opinion, K reckons Dave's is better. I rest my case!

Having seen one of the Stiff tours in B’ham way back when. Costello was very good, but Drury was unique. Quintessentially English,Bawdy. I love him cause he does a modern take on Chaucer. That’s his cover version.

Sort of quite like the Birthday Party's live version of Loose by the Stooges a little bit more than the original. Also Rowland Howard and Lydia Lunch's version of 'Some Velvet Morning' pips Nancy and Lee's version if only for Rowland's debauched vocal. Out-debauching Lee Hazelwood vocally is quite some achievement in my book.
