I can‘t answer the travel rule part, but for the question itself, it is common for covid patient to have a period of time that virus can sometimes be detected by PCR (sometimes not), it can be for weeks, in rare occasions for months. This kind of virus shedding is low in titre (high Ct value) and not considered to be infectious.
Do you need a negative test result in the UK to board the flight? Can you do lateral flow test instead of PCR? You will also need a PCR test on day 2 when you are back in the UK, and if that would be positive (I don‘t think it‘s highly possible) you and everyone in your household theoretically would be pinned for 10 days.

So on 9th July "The Delta variant of Covid-19 will be dominant in France within days, the health minister said today, ahead of a meeting of ministers on Monday (July 12) in which they are to discuss whether new Covid measures are needed."

So perhaps my projection was a little extreme...

So, to recap: the UK Govt decide to require quarantine on returnees from France because of the Beta variant that is minimal on mainland France, and possibly declining. France fears the rise of a Delta variant that is dominant in the UK. And yet France allow UK residents to travel despite us having 5 times the number of Delta cases as France?

:confused: It's hard to see the science informing the decisions here.

I think the UK decision on France travel is lacking good scientific base, at least we can't see it (and that's not right, these data should all be available).
The French decision on UK travellers is more tricky, one can argue it's too late for France to restrict travel now.
 
Just returning from France via Dieppe. Left UK 15/07 for my daughter's wedding in Le Mans this Saturday day just gone. Due to change with France, had to order day 8 test on Sunday as I had only booked day 2 test before leaving. Arranged PCR test online for Sunday morning which cost €49 plus €20 additional fee. All straight-forward, apart from having to pay £253 for the UK tests. Will have to isolate on my return, luckily I can continue to WFH.

Not bothering with the day 5 release test, then?
 
The French charge non-EU travellers €49 for PCR test, and an antigen test €29. I have heard some friends managed to get a price in the UK similar to that; I also heard advices that do not choose cheap one as they don't guarantee reporting result in time.... All just too complicated.

There is an arguement of not using NHS PCR resources, though I have an impression much of the PCR was not done by NHS, but some contracted labs anyway? I might be wrong. If we will have 100000 cases per day, we will need lots of PCR capacity, so that part I get it. The lateral flow (antigen) test I don't understand; Ministry of Health encourages people to do two antigen tests per week anyway, why one of them cannot be used as prove?
 
Filling out the various forms on Eurotunnel for my wife and kids to drive there on Sunday.

It would appear "computer says no" - they can't accept that my under 11 year old daughter doesn't need a PCR test to go to France. Soooo frustrating.

And another thing - they expect you to print off forms, sign them and then upload them. Not sure how many people take printers with them everywhere these days.... but I am not one of them

You should be able to sign a pdf using standard Adobe acrobat these days straight off a mobile or laptop. Might save some trouble.
