NWR EV thread (was "Anyone buying a Tesla Model 3 (or any BEV) ?")

Not I, although it would probably be the car I'd choose to replace the S.
I'm disappointed that other manufacturers have been so slow in coming out with good options. Even if they lag Tesla with some of the tech (and the third party charging network roll out is still too slow), they could at least make up for it with fun features like sunroof, convertible, nice interiors, etc. BMW i4 looks good in that sense, but load capacity isn't great, and... well... it's a BMW - with BMW dealerships and service centres to deal with.
The other brand I'm still keeping an eye on (but will be too late for me) is Nio. The ET5 would likely be the best option for me, although it's not a hatchback.
 
The KIA EV6 and Hyundai are selling well in Norway and woud be doing even better if they didn't have supply issues.

I have been in no hurry for an EV but have ordered an Skoda Enyaq 80x after a couple of test drives. Over a year long delivery but that's OK by me. Guess they need that time to fix some app and SW issues, which the KIAs and Hyundais also have.

I am eyeing the Hyundai Ioniq 5 but have to wait until end of the year to get the car, crazy long wait.
 
Went for a test drive of EV6 GT-Line S today. Pretty impressed. A few issues for me:
1) Boot is quite small
2) Display is cluttered and the overall design somewhat odd.
3) Nice to have wireless charging, but lack of wireless CarPlay is annoying
4) Charge port on the wrong side for when Tesla open up their Superchargers to others
5) A great shame that the cream interior not available in UK
6) Central seat in the back not so comfortable.

But plenty of positives
1) Drives nicely
2) Cool HUD
3) 3-pin plug socket could be very handy
4) Quite attractive (exterior better looking to me than Tesla Y)
5) Sunroof!

My options for when the PCP on my S75D expires in December:
1) Buy it (possibly via finance)
2) Tesla Model Y
3) Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5
4) Skoda Enyaq (seems cheap, but it's very much an "options" car)
5) Nissan Arriya (Haven't looked at this in detail yet)
6) Maybe go small with an ID.3/Cupra Born (a real shame that the Skoda variant of this seems to be lagging behind)
7) Other vaguely possible options include Polestar, Ford Mach-e, BMW i4 (really, really don't want a BMW, but it looks like a capable car!)

The questions that will help decide include:
1) Will maintaining an out of warranty model S be terribly expensive? (Crap DRLs are the obvious point here)
2) What will be the interest rates for finance on any of these options
3) Will Tesla open up Superchargers to all?
4) Will Gridserve/Instavolt/Ionity speed up the the roll out of their chargers to an acceptable level by EOY2022?
 
We took delivery of our Skoda Enyaq just before Christmas and we are delighted with it. We went for the iv60 model and added some options but also received the government’s grant so it was quite affordable. In terms of size and practicality (kids plus dog etc) it is very comparable to our outgoing Discovery but MUCH nicer to drive as I’m sure most EVs are.

On a trial basis, yes. And I guess they'll use the results to judge whether to do it going forward. It won't be a USP forever, and opening it up would also give them access to a lot of funding. If they can sell a lot of electricity to everyone, it will be true to their avowed mission as well as long term profitability.

I agree. They would lose their usp.
Tesla execs are rewarded on the basis of Tesla's stock price. Increase in demand for EVs is probably going to drive up Tesla stock more than Tesla market share will. Tesla's USP is the gigafactories, not the Supercharging, imo. My sense is that opening up superchargers is going to be driven by there being sufficient capacity that Tesla users aren't having to queue to an unacceptable level - once they're not stopping people from buying Teslas, then open it up.

They still have a significant advantage in terms coverage with their charging sites that means an EV buyer who plans to use the car regularly for long drives really has no choice but to buy a tesla. Obviously, others are seeking to replicate that but it’s not clear to me whether or when they will be able to do so.

It never ceases to amaze me at just how crap the non-Tesla charging providers have been. It is almost at T&T levels of waste of public grants. I can only assume that it's intrinsically a non-profitable business. That, and that TPTB have allowed the oil companies (of all people!) to get involved. Do they have to charge £1/kWh to make it worth their while? I have good vibes about Instavolt and Gridserve, but even then - it's slow, slow, slow! If someone had told me where we'd be when I bought my Tesla in 2018, I'd not have believed them.

Grant Schapps should have his Tesla confiscated, and replaced with an iPace or something!
 
Just looking at the Skoda Enyaq... I like the Skoda brand (my Superb really was superb) and it seems quite cheap at first, but once you add on options that are standard on a Tesla (and many other brands) it bumps up to the low £40k's. I'm beginning to think that buying a used Model S for £35k or so (from myself) is actually not a bad option! Sure, there are stupid things that will result in costs - like the DRLs, Heater element, etc - but even so. The only downside is that the range of mine (220 miles) is eclipsed by the alternatives.
