A friend arranged a zoom with a selection of spirits chosen by the bar manager from Hotel Baur au Lac in Zurich. Lots of fun and some nice drinks.
Experts Choice Spirit Tasting Guide - Batch 2
Elephant London Dry Gin
Light. Ghostly. Pine. This is a decent sipping gin. If I were feeling more ambitious this evening I’d taste a drop alongside the reference Tanqueray 10 - I suspect it would show excellently. Looking at the price from masters of malt - under £30 for a 500cl bottle.
Plantation Pineapple Stiggins Fancy Rum
The nose is a bit much - banana almost as much as pineapple. In spite of the fact that I absolutely hate the idea, this is jolly nice. Some sweetness, but not so much that it’s not a grown up drink. Coming back for a sniff - this has more depth to it behind the obvious fruity hit. Will I buy a bottle? No - but if you gave me a shot of it outside while listening to carols - I’d be all in.
JAMAICA WORTHY PARK 2013 TRANSCONTINENTAL RUM
57.1% - light, spicy but ooh so spirity. Mid-colour - light a medium dark rum. Some fruity notes, some caramel. This is super.
Del Maguey Mezcal Chichicapa
Not an expert on Mezcal. On the nose - somewhat smoky - but also smells like tequila. On the palate - wow - like a lifted, aromatic, almost eternal Islay malt. Coming back to the nose - silage on a warm day. This is fantastic - I want to learn more about Tequila / Mezcal.
Gin del Professore Authentic Crocodile Gin
An old tom gin. Herbaceous more than citrusy. A hint of sweetness - almost soapy. This is a fun interesting drink. Would I buy? Likely not for me - but I might for you.
Nikka Whisky From The Barrel
OK - this is the daddy. Some wonderful chat about drinking this at some whisky bar in Singapore made it feel even more special. Hint of sweetness.
