NWR Film of the Year 2019

Managed to catch up with many, many, many, many movies on the 25 hours of flying to and from NZ. Joker is very good indeed, as is Parasite, and though a bit rambling, finally got to watch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and enjoyed it. Stan and Laurel whimsically amusing. For sheer mindlessness I rather enjoyed Gemini Man, mostly in admiring the cleverness of the de-ageing technology on the younger Will Smith. Aborted a couple of others - Ad Astra and something else - after 20 minutes of boredom.

That's the big advantage of watching movies on planes. If after 20 minutes you decide it is rubbish, it is easy to move onto the next one.

Pryce was excellent in two Pope as was Brad Pitt in Once upon a time...
but that film needed a pair of siscors.
That does remind me of the movie that I seem to be diametrically opposite in view to every reviewer out there: The Irishman. I thought it was reasonably excruciating rubbish that could have done with about an hour lopped off it. But everyone else seems to love it. It reminded me of an excruciatingly painful jazz performance I went to once, where every-time you think they are just about finished and people start to clap, largely from relief, then they suddenly surge again.

+1

The Lighthouse last night was the most appalling, pretentious tosh I can remember seeing, unfortunately Parasite was a sell-out so Hobson's choice.

Hey Kevin,
why did my post prompt you to talk about the Irishman! ;)

I enjoyed it but there are much better mafia movies out there.
I thought the anti ageing didn't work (they still walked like old men)
He should have cast younger actors and it would have worked better as, say, 6 one hour episodes.
The costumes and set design were excellent though.

Funnily enough I watched The Irishman yesterday.

I enjoyed it even though I'm not the biggest Al Pacino fan since his earliest movies. I thought the Joe Pesci character was great and a lovely counterpoint to the one in Goodfellas.

It was a bit long winded and I agree about the walking like old men (though apparently they had coaching from posture experts!) The bit where de Niro kicks the grocer was much the same too.

I was reading a bit about it afterwards and each of the different eras were shot using cinema styles of the time which was quite interesting I thought.

I'm in complete agreement. I watched it all the way through because it's Scorcese, De Niro, Pacino & Pesci - but it needed some very serious editing. The difference between that & Casino is very stark, and not in a good way.

Parasite, Joker, The Favourite and Jojo Rabbit.

I don't know what to say about Netflix - a lot of their content just doesn't appeal. I tend to download more from BFI.

The Irishman was too long and a mistake im many ways for the actors involved. For me every NYC / New Jersey Italian gangster movie now has to compete with the magnificent acting and writing of The Sopranos, and Scorcese/de Niro or not, that's some task.

Purely your mention of scissors Ray. I didn't detect any accent in your writing..
