January 2022 Purchases

All resolutions quickly ditched with a mixed case from TWS.
Including
Aldas Egri Bikaver
Exhibition Langhe Nebbiolo
Petrodolce Etna Rosso
Lafon-Rochet

Really enjoyed the previous vintage of the Etna.

Broke my duck today…

6 x Envinate Palo Blanco 2020 (back in stock at Decantolo and Gourmet Hunters for around £25 a pop)
6 x Jeremy Arnaud Chablis 1er Cru ‘Vau de Vey’ 2018 (with the very welcome 25% Marlo deal)
6 x Chateau de Messey Macon-Cruzille Clos des Avoueries 2020 (on a whim following Swig email - anyone tried previous vintages?)
My small property in Burgundy is local to Ch de Messey and the wine has always ken rather local, low key yet perfectly decent solid Macon at very sensible prices, especially when bin-ended at the local merchants. it appears that under a new-ish winemaker team they have come a long way, although reading that swig e-mail, it rather sounded as if they had really upped the game thus year… I made it an easy pass.

It’s the classic dilemma.
One ‘discovers’ a producer & enjoys following their progress. Occasionally their reputation becomes noteworthy amongst the wider wine world which reinforces one’s prescient judgment. A small number achieve a status that leads to rising prices which become unaffordable. Then it’s time to move on & start the cycle again.

Thanks for this David, I guess I’ll soon see whether Swig are over-hyping things or not! In any case I’ll be trying something new (to me) which is always exciting.

A half case of Piper Heidsieck NV Brut... great QPR across the range from this producer the past 4 or 5 years ( I do like Essentiel in particular ).
Various Marsannay lieu dits from Charles Audoin ( all 2019.... which seemed to garner very positive reviews ).

A case of ‘14 Nicolas Rossignol Santenots

In my limited experience so far Rossignol is v good in so called "off vintages" (e.g. not solaire). Broadly because of his late picking style. For example I have loved 17s tried EP but disliked 09 and I hear from JM's report (or was it NM'?) that he may have overbaked 2020.... Think those 2014s should be à pointe.

that’s my conclusion too, was trying to find some ‘13 and ‘14 vintages, managed to find a case IB from Lea & Sanderman. The ‘20 Caillerets has ABV of 15.2%, yuck!
