Lidl's Belgian beer box...

It's back with stronger beers and only £7.99. This time it has Piraat (10.5%), Piraat triple Hop (10.5%), Gulden Draak (10.5%), Gulden Draak 9000 (10.5%), Bornem Tripel (9%) and Bornem Dubbel (7.4%?)...Some of these beers go for not far off £4.00 in some beer shops...Oh dear, there is too much cheap beer about (the earlier version of this box was around £9.99 when it came out a few years ago)...

Thanks for the heads up on this one David. Aldi is more convenient for me so don't normally see the Lidl offers. Managed to snag a box at the third store I checked in - was beginning to lose faith. I remember this one from 2 or 3 years ago. Some cracking beers in aldi also - as you say too much cheap beer!

I tried Lidl in St Neots today. No Belgian beer packs and no other beers of particular interest. I went in Co-op in St Neots and got 6 beers for just over £7. This included 3 beers from small breweries in Yorkshire I had never heard of and 3 bottles of Budvar Premier(7.5%) at £0.95 each. They had several different beers from breweries in Yorkshire; not sure why. They also had own brand wheat beer and Czech lager for £0.85 each. I might go in Co-op more often.

I have just tried one of the beers from Co-op, Whaler from the Whitby brewery. This is pretty good: toffee and citrus with decent bitterness.

Still irritated at missing out on the Belgian beer package though.

I enjoyed all the beers in the box. I did think the tripel was the weakest at first, but I really liked the second bottle. I left the country and only managed to buy three boxes before I went...I think would have bought five if I hadn't gone away. I have finished two boxes, and might save the third...Did Alan miss out on it last time too? I suspect he was looking in the wrong section...

I bought a box today....The previous price was ridiculous. It's still only about £1.75 a bottle (the Gulden Draak 9000 is £3.98 at beers of Europe, Piraat Triple Hop £3.68 and so on...), so great value. I also saw a box of twelve French beers (from about 4.5% to 8.5%) for £7.99. I would have got one but I've just had a box of Belgian beer delivered, so...Has anyone bought it? I hadn't heard of the brewery...

Thanks for the heads up. I have at last managed to get some! I went to St Neots early this morning. It must have sold out the previous times. They only had a few packs left this time.

I did not see the box of French beer. They did have some 750ml bottles of Bier De Garde. I did not buy any of these as I have not heard of the brewery. There are some very good versions of this beer and some not very good.

Well done, you must have been pleased to see them after all these years! That box of French beer seemed far too cheap (again, £7.99 for twelve bottles of mostly strong beer)...The 750ml bottle is something like £2.49...At 7% (if it's drinkable) I wouldn't complain...I'm sure it's okay (and yet I didn't buy one).

Now, strangely, I had the first of my Belgian box, bought in Oct, tonight - the Bornem Double - great stuff. Don't drink many beers in this style but very much enjoyed it. Seemed perfectly balanced for my tastes: hardly any trace of hop or smoke bitterness, just rounding hops to take the sweetness off which together with the carbonation made it farcically drinkable at 7.2% . Like a supercharged porter. The usual candy-floss thing I pick up with Belgians with layers of chocolate and almost dunkel-type malt above it.
