It’s certainly a weird one. A good friend‘s family have owned an estate nearby since the middle ages. They’ve somehow kept it intact whilst the town has continued to grow around them. A bit offputting sitting in a gunbus knowing you’re outgunned by the locals!

I used to visit Corby twice a week as a salesman for Nestlé.
This was at a time when once you had the orders you would go to a phonebox and relay the requirement to your office.
Corby was an exception as there was never a phonebox which was operative so one had to hold the orders until you got to Stamford,Uppingham or Thrapston.
When in the centre language was a barrier as Scottish Steelworkers and families had a really strong accent, perhaps emphasised to exclude jessies like me!
It should be noted that even in a 1.1 Escort popular you were only a 5 minute drive away from amazing estates, beautiful land and scenery.

If you are referring to Great Oakley it is indeed a most peculiar situation isn’t it?

It was in Corby that I had my most serious car accident (slammed in the nearside by a guy shooting out of a side road). When he eventually emerged from his totalled Vauxhall his toupee was still arranged in the centre of his face like a giant tarantula or the creature attached to John Hurt in Alien.
