October Purchases

Mixed case of 2019 Pataille Aligotés from TWS.
2x Basic Aligote
1 each of 4 single vineyards.

Like the mix, interested to try the different sites, haven't tried all of them before as they're pretty hard to track down.
That's very hard to resist, and is extraordinarily well priced. I've been so underwhelmed by the basic version that I will, however, resist.

I've just taken delivery of a six-pack of Tissot's Patchwork Chardonnay 2018 from TWS. I was inspired to buy this by Julia Harding's write-up when it (and the corresponding 2019 version) featured in the Wine of The Week column on jancis robinson dot com on the 15th October. (The Wine of The Week articles are free to view; I don't subscribe to jrdotcom.) I am a big fan of Jura chardonnay in general and also of (most of) Tissot's wines but even if I'd never heard of either I think Julia's exceptionally positive commentary would have impelled me to jump in.

That apart, my only purchase this month was a mixed six-pack of Southern Italian wines from Buon Vino, whose shop I was able to visit when I attended Courtyard Dairy's cheese-making course located in the same complex, one each of:-

Paglione IGP Puglia Componimento 2015
Vigna de Franco Ciro Rosso Classico Avita 2016
I Custodi delle Vigne dell'Etna Etna Rosso Pistus 2017
Mocavero Salento Negroamaro Curtirussi 2017
Fatalone Gioia del Colle Primitivo Riserva 2018
Terre Nobili di Lidia Matera IGP Calabria Ipazia 2019

Just had delivery from Swig of a variety of (mainly South African) bottles. The non-SA contribution was Chateu Bertrand Summum 2010 - a Cadillac that holds its own against a lot of Sauternes/Barsac bigger hitters. Only produced in exceptional years for noble rot on their property. The latest release from Duncan Savage (2020 vintage) promises much and it is probably the chenin “Never been asked to dance” that probably appeals the most from the bunch. Last is a missing bottle of BlankBottle Oppie-Koppie that went AWOL from previous delivery.

I did the same with the patchwork Colin. 4 bottles though with a pair of ZH to make up the 6 pack.

A quick visit to Sainsbury’s for some Laurent Perrier 08, moet 13, Contino 16 and two taste the difference bottles, the Languedoc white and the Zinfandel. The white was tasted on Friday blind and was lovely, at under £5 a bargain.

I couldn’t resist a fairly well priced 6 pack of 1989 Sourdais Chinon Les Quatre Ferrures, the Vinous review of the 2018 Felsina Rancia made that a buy, and then a regular buy of 2018 Produttori Barbaresco. Not the best month for the wine budget

Three mixed cases this month, a real mix of stuff, but I also put in an order with Basket Press Wines for bottles of each of the new 2020 cuvées they import from Annamária Réka-Koncz in Eastern Hungary. They have become rather sought after by a certain type of London restaurant (the ones where people sometimes complain about all the natural wines on the list). Two different petnats, red white and orange.

I am actively trying to buy no wine in November.

That does look like fun! That was actually sold as a mixed case? I often wonder about such things at auction as they tend to go for a relative bargain.
It was indeed, during the timed online sale. Pretty sure I was the only bidder so it was a bit of a bargain yes. Some other mixed cases went unsold and would have been great value at their lower estimates - a mixed burgundy with a few bottles of Skyaasen and some Guillemot etc was particularly tempting

Well retail for Keller is preposterous bye and large and mixed cases of vintage port can obviously be hit and miss but it does represent value.

Most mixed cases I put together are loosely associated eg rioja/ penedes/ southern rhone but sometimes you get sent 400 bottles and that means some singles, some pairs, some sixes, some twelves but almost inevitably some leftovers.

As to who sold it well I think Claire was auctioneer for that one. :p

Daniel, start on the left!

Popped into BBR Warehouse shop in Basingstoke today for the "Last Chance to Buy Week".
The big bin end bottle tables that I like seemed a bit smaller, more space taken up with things like Gin displays. In fact, I was told that they will have to bring out the wine gradually over the week for space reasons.
Only picked up a few things, a couple of bottles of 2001 Domaine Rion Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras and some other random bits and bobs including a 2007 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc as I wanted to try my luck, and a 2016 Ferrando Carema.

You would think that being overseas and almost halfway around the world while facing rolling blackouts that disrupts wifi would hamper if not dull the enthusiasm to buy wines. Not at all. Resistance is futile, the siren call must be answered.

Piedra Negra Pinot Gris Rosado, Mendoza
Saint-Mont Les Vieux Vines
De Martino 'Gallardia' Cinsault, Chile
A Los Vinateros Bravo Granitico 'Natural' Pais, Chile
Cellar del Roure 'Vermell', Spain
Pra Monte Grande Soave
Cantina del Pino Langhe Nebbiolo
Smith & Cross Navy Proof Rum
Rum Nation Ilha de Madeira 3 Year Old Agd Rum

And just to see what it would taste like at home, a couple of bottles of one of the popular wines at the local American Embassy Club bar: Wente Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon, Livermore.

Cheers ................ Mahmoud.
