Supermarket promotions Q4 2021

Not supermarket but TWS have some reduction on selected bubbles, so 6 for price of 5 type deal. Drops the tws NV to £22.50 which is tempting, always best left for a year or two...
Also spotted this and a case snaffled to reserves earlier. We recently quickly dispatched a six pack that had been in reserves for 18 months (lot L19xxxx) which was delicious, I feel it is back on good form

Now trying to decide what to do for festive bubbles… thinking magnums but uncorked sold out of LR Brut this morning. Tempted by TWS own mags (apparently 2008 base rather than 2015 in half-magnum) but they are packed in cases of six to get the discounted price… drat…

Oliver, I’d split a case if you fancied 3? One of us could buy, add to reserves, and ask Member Services to transfer 3?

Last weekend we drank a bottle of TWS own-label champagne bought in March 2018 and it was very good. It was the last of a six-pack and the last bottle of TWS champagne I had, so I was tempted to buy a case in the current offer. It's a very good buy at £22.50. I was also tempted by the Deutz but in the end I plumped for the Gossett Grande Reserve at £192 for six instead. That's slightly less than 6 for the price of 4 based on the single-bottle price. Mind you, I'd never pay £49 for it.

If I were to buy a case of the TWS champagne it would fall firmly into the category of wine bought because it was cheap, not because I need it! On that basis I'm trying to resist. Mind you, I probably didn't need the Gossett either...

For me it's an investment opportunity - to save me buying in the future. I think I now have enough Champagne to last me until about 2025, so I should slow down now. I should definitely dispose of some surplus reds, though.

A new Lidl wine tour next week. Starts on the Monday (22nd) rather than Thursday for some reason. Return of some old favourites, Salneval Albarino, Canadian Icewine and some whites, dry and sweet, from Tokaj. The Chablis PC at £16 looks interesting as does the 10 year old tawny port for £12. Not really my scene but the expensive (for Lidl) Champagnes might tick a few boxes. For me though the Dao reserva and a couple of the full bodied Spanish reds £7.50-10 are more likely purchases. I seem to recall the last vintage of the Dao was beautiful. Plus, of course, I will be hunting through the bargain bin.

Next weekend 26-28 they are reducing their NZ PN to £5. This wine has shown a lot of variation in the past, depending on the vintage, and I don't know what they will have on offer, but when good it is great VFM.

I wonder has Tom been sent any of the wine tour wines to taste?

Who's the producer of the Chablis? Chablis Premier Cru Les Muses? Is that a real name or like a M&S "Lochmuir salmon"? Definitely something a bit fish there! ;-)

Maybe not as 'exciting' as some but in my local Sainsbury's Local today for some freezer bags was surprised to see their Chablis La Terrasse 2019 reduced from £15 to £9. Producer is the UVC Co-Op. The freezer bags purchase became a little expensive for a cellar defender !

Hmmm, a Magnum or 2 of TWS gratien own label has just appeared - disgorged in june this year.
Hmmm indeed!

Apologies if I have forwarded duff information - it was reported on TWS forum that a recent in person tasting in London (hosted by Jo Locke), showed both bottle and mag and they were informed 2015 and 2008 base respectively. That said, I suppose they could have shown an older magnum although unless they made a point of conveying that information it would rather undermine the usefulness of the comparative tasting!

Perhaps worth investigating with TWS based on the lot number, although the initial answers on such questions are not always useful until one gets to the buyer.

The notes say that the bottles are to be drunk within three years and the magnums within two, I don't know whether that's any indication of anything.
