Very sorry to hear of Harrison Birtwistle's death. I know not many people like modernist contemporary classical music but I've always rather liked Birtwistle. But I haven't heard everything he wrote. Most notably his saxophone concerto Panic is one I've never listened to. Let's change that.
Reminds me of driving late in the evening with the 8 track on. Nice.Could only be the 1970s - they just don’t make heavily orchestrated dance tracks like this any more.
I was about to ask our classical contingent whether brass players in orchestras ever get the urge to switch genres and cut loose as part of an imperious brass section really going for it? But then I suppose you can’t get more front and centre for brass than the Harrison Birtwistle piece above.
brass section really going for it
I liked that song when it came out but more than the track itself, I liked the homage to Geno Washington, a great live band of the late 60's.Surely this remains one of the all time great TOTP performances. When I saw him swinging that trombone around I feared he would have Kevin's head off. As for the two lads on sax. Unbelievably their producer apparently thought it was a terrible mistake to have them so prominent in the mix.
