Ben,Is Krug nv as good as it was?
Thanks Ray I actually have much more experience with the vintage than the NV. I've never been particularly excited by Krug other than the 81 and 96 but I always feel like I should be buying some NV and tucking them away. I guess the 08 base would be a good place to start - any idea when it is released?Ben,
There was a bit of a dip a few years ago which seemed to be when they cut the time down pre disgorgement and shipped a bit quicker.
IIRC that coincided with the 01 base year, which was a crappy time.
Things are well back on track and even those bottles will now have aged and improved.
Simon was at a night where we had 07 base GC from many different bottles, and whilst 07 aint the greatest and there was variation I think he might agree that they would in isolation be at least pretty darn good.
Mind you the 02 base GC we had that night was one of the best champagnes I can recall, for me it was drinking better than 02 vintage and even 02 Clos de Mesnil
Sometime after what will be a huge price hike!!Thanks Ray I actually have much more experience with the vintage than the NV. I know I expect to be in the tiny minority here but I honestly find the 2006 Comtes the most disappointing vintage of this wine I have ever drunk, but there is no right or wrong in taste. I find it loose, fat and very soft. The mousse is more reminiscent of a young NV champagne to me than a fine vintage wine. Don't get me wrong, I love Comtes usually and think it one of the great blanc de blancs and a fantastic value compared to the likes of Salon, Clos de Mesnil etc., but the 2006 leaves me desperately disappointed; and yes, I have blind tasted the wine and felt the same without the help of label or bottle shape.
yeah, if I have problem with comtes 06, it would be too tight and slim at the moment. But I can also say comtes 02 is 'less fat' and 'harder' with good volume of muscle, if I try to understand what Simon meant. That is most odd, because I've never found the '06 fat or indeed soft, although I've not tasted in a few months... might be time to taste again!
Getting 3 bottles of Krug for 65 pounds each when they were being discontinued by a Tesco near to my father's home around 2 years ago was, perhaps, one of the better wine buys I've made...
