NWR TV Thread

With Ricky Gervais in the news with such a brilliant opening to the Golden Globe awards I realised we had not watched After Life.
Last night we watched the whole series and it was just brilliant and to me at least, uplifting.
Anyone with access to Netflix who has not watched it might find it a treat.
May have been mentioned before in this thread.

Agreed. It took a while to get going, and I would imagine a lot of people giving up after episode 1 or 2.

I found a similar experience with the latest series of "Mum". Initially cringe-inducing, but the last couple of episodes made it worthwhile.

Not really TV, but broadcast media at least....

I've been getting into audiobooks recently - starting with a desire for entertainment on our long drive to Tuscany and back in October. Listened to a few on Audible, and then discovered that BBC Sounds has quite a few good ones available for free.

Stumbled across this series this evening. Mildly diverting, I thought - anyone else listened? BBC Radio 4 - From the Vineyard

I've only listened to the Burgundy and Muscadet ones. Will try Pinotage tomorrow.

If you want something to listen to on long drives, I would strongly recommend Hardcore History podcasts. A range of periods covered including ancient Persia/Assyria, WW1, the dawn of the nuclear age etc etc. Done by a former wall st journal reporter and they’re absolutely brilliant.

That sounds fab, thankyou.

Resurrected in these times....
Forr those who have not seen it, I really recommend the Oscar winning documentary series that is back on iPlayer: OJ Simpson: Made in America. It's a 6-parter (IIRC), but one of the best things I have seen on television in recent years (which isn't a lot I confess). I had no real interest in OJ Simpson, but this is a terrifically wide-ranging look at the modern history of race and race relations in America through the prism of OJ Simpson and the trial. Absolutely fascinating.

Somehow over the weekend whilst doing some channel surfing with the remote I managed to stumble upon some material from the other side of the pond.
Saturday Night Live, a chap interviewing Obama who is promoting a book, and Mariah Carey's Christmas special. The common thread was that each was completely detached from any semblance of reality.
I would not have thought it possible to make “I’m a Celebrity” seem positively high brow.:(

If vast amounts of gratuitous and extremely graphic sex (of every conceivable variety) and drugs, no plot lines, humour or suspense and a treatment of it’s subject that plays not the slightest resemblance to reality is your thing then I can heartily recommend the HBO/BBC show Industry.

Been thoroughly enjoying Queen’s Gambit. The sets and costuming are worth the price of admission alone. Quite an interesting if somewhat tenuous reimagining of the Bobby Fisher story. Good harmless fun so far, but not quite enough drugs to qualify for a spot in Industry.

There's an article in The Times today by "An ex-City worker" saying that "Industry" is an accurate reflection of "life in the Square Mile". He/she states that it's "more like a documentary than a drama". Too late for me, I'm afraid - I'm too old now...
