NWR What films have you been watching?

For pure entertainment try Bad Times at the El Royale with Jeff Bridges and Jon Hamm. A ‘noir-ish’ thriller set in a motel on the Nevada/California border.
Have also recently enjoyed The Forty Year Old Version on Netflix.

Just posted on the "listening to" thread about Springsteen's new album. There is an accompanying documentary on Apple TV - Letter to You - which is a must watch for anyone with a passing interest in how artists like Springsteen and the East Street Band put an album together. These are musicians with such talent and grace with the best part of 50 years experience behind them.

I saw on a French web site that there’s a big new Zappa docu-film by Alex Winter, Out on 27 Nov and I’m probably not the only one here that this would interest. The director had full support of the family and full access to the archives.

Not sure where one will watch it in these Covid times?

The Queen’s Gambit is outrageously excellent. Cinematography, production design, acting, editing, script, story, pacing, invisible and visible CGI. Just brilliant.

I Don't Feel at Home in the World Anymore on Netflix. Quirky, funny, clever. The marriage of two quite different genres sits a bit awkwardly at times but the originality of the approach also stops it being too predictable.

Okay, so everyone on here with kids younger than 16 (maybe 18, maybe older) should watch the Social Dilemma on Netflix. In fact, anyone on here who uses social media should probably watch it. It's not perfect, but it's really frickin' good. Guaranteed it wil open your eyes.

Best thing I have seen for a while was Get Out, very sinister rather than scary, but also very clever.
Just finished watching Midsommar, which is kind of messed up but has a lot of themes and talking points.

Also really enjoyed Queen's Gambit, though I am sure I saw a non relevant piece being moved while a king was in check, in about episode 2... Very stylish and well made. Good acting too. Main actress is British of course - terrible cultural appropriation.;)

The famous writer Stephen King posted this on Twitter regarding THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT:

„I have watched a lot of TV during this cursed year--I know I'm not alone--and the best of the best is THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT, on Netflix. Utterly thrilling. I thought nothing would beat THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO SEVEN, but this does.“
