White wine inspiration

Nick - I’m probably in the same boat but less concerned, but a few reccos

Verdicchio - cheaper than the Zoli and not as exciting but still v good is the colle Stefano from A&B for about £7.50 ib

Semillon - Sam lambson’s experimental sem was under a tenner ib from L&w I recall

Estate Argyros estate Assyrtiko £18 ib from L&W, I bought a case of the ‘21s recently it’s great.

I also like southern Italian whites and they’re cheap

Tim Adams semillon
Alsace pinot gris
Picpoul de pinet
Jurancon sec
Saint Mont (Le Faite or L'Empreinte)
Dry furmint

Majestic have a very interesting De Bortoli dry semillon, 2002 (sic). I just looked on their website and it's reduced to £5.99, and unsurprisingly it's sold out :(

Lots of great Italian options to try Nick.
Feudi di San Gregorio wines are widely available, the Cutizzi Greco di Tufo is exceptional, but you can't really go wrong with any of their wines from the triumvirate of Southern Italian whites: Greco, Fiano and Falanghina.

Lots of great stuff coming out of Sicily now, try some good quality Grillo or Lucido Catarratto from the west of the island (Centopassi, Marco de Bartoli, Caruso & Minini, Tasca d'Almerita/Tenuta Regaleali) ... but you specifically mentioned recommendations for Etna Bianco, so here's a few :
Al-Cantara- Occhi di Chiumi and especially Luci Luci
Palmento Costanzo - Etna Bianco di Sei
Pietradolce - Etna Bianco Archineri
And at the top end:
Benanti - Pietramarina (preferably with some bottle age) but if price is too steep, try one of their single Contrada whites for half the price.

From the Veneto, try some Lugana or Custoza. Monte del Fra are a top producer for both. Soave from Pieropan, Ca' Rugate or Coffele (TWS)

Vernaccia di San Gimignano from Tuscany: Panizzi or Montenidoli.

Verdicchio from the Marche : Villa Bucci (TWS) or Umani Ronchi

Others have mentioned the Friuli region, but don't miss the far north of Alto Adige (South Tyrol) too. Cantina Adrano and Terlano wines are excellent, from Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio.

In Friuli I would put in a word for Vignai Da Duline. Autochthonous or international, white or red, they’re exciting across the range.

Crete - Lyrarakis

England - Davenport, Yotes Court, Stopham

Graves (not sure I ‘get’ white Bordeaux from elsewhere) - Latour-Martillac

Lots of stuff in SW France, eg Irouleguy but there isn’t a huge amount of that about

Definitely second the suggestion of Davenport from England. Would also add Gutter & Stars, Chapel Down Kits Coty, Artelium & Wharie Experience.

I don’t know a lot about them but despite being expensive the few Swiss whites (mostly Chasselas) I’ve had have been pretty decent.

I see Roberson have the Stopham Pinot Blanc 2019 in their bin ends at the moment. Any good?

Not tasted it. For me the Pinot Gris is the jewel in the Stopham crown but at that price it’s got to be worth a go and it was an excellent vintage. I’ve enjoyed the PB in previous years. I understand that it was the quality specifically of the Stopham pinots and bacchus which inspired the owners of Yotes Court to plant a sizeable acreage of the same.

My late Swiss relative used to drink this wine: Cret-Dessous Calamin Epesses Familles Gay et Pestalozzi, which made such an impression on me that I still have the bottle as a souvenir. But I have not tried it since 2010. Current price is CHF192/12 before shipping - coming across this bottle recently reminded me that I should seek some out.
