TN 2017 Weiser-Künstler "Ellergrub" - Kabinett of the Year

  1. 2017 Weiser-Künstler "Enkircher Ellergrub" Kabinett

Yesterday afternoon I had this Kabinett in the glass and there is no doubt for me that here we have the Kabinett of the Year or Vintage. A dream of velvet&silk. In addition a mindblowing texture, balance, length and drinking pleasure. Fair to say I had not many Kabinett of the vintage 2017 so far, as they are just released. But I have developed over the years a good sense for quality regarding Kabinett based on my BerlinKabinettCup. Also I had a 2017 Hofgut Falkenstein "Krettnacher Euchariusberg" Kabinett #12 in a other glass which was great too. But the Ellergrub outperformed the Euchariusberg. So I strongly recommend you this Riesling.

  2. Their wines made an appearance at Mythos-Mosel They were at one of the venues we visited. I decided to be selective/self-disciplined & not try their wines. Foolishly, it appears.

  3. Ouch!

Several Mosel experts confirmed my impressions in the last hours. Let me quote Petra Pahlings/assistant of Katharina Prüm

    "fantastic wine"

BTW, the 2014 version won the BerlinKabinettCup.

  4. I can imagine the Ellergrub was brilliant- I think it often is though. Have you also tried their Wolfer Sonnenlay 2017 Kabinett Martin?

Most kabinetts (kabinetten) showed very convincingly at the recent HowardRipley 2017 tasting, some were beauties!

  5. 2017 not, but older vintages of Sonnenlay deeply impressed me.

  6. Be interesting at some point to maybe have a thread and feedback on this. I have my views though very uneducated they are just a gut feeling and feel.

  7. A german Mosel Riesling lover wrote this yesterday:

    "Colour: light lemon-yellow
Smell: Sponti-Yeast, citrus fruits, meadow flowers and schist minerality
Palate: light, clear, cool, lush citrus fruit, pear, mirabelle, strawberry. Sublime sweetness in complex harmonic fruit-acidtiy-play combined with a fresh-delicate acidity and schist minerality. Light herbs spiciness - dense, creamy, delicate-light and slim, precise and with tension.

Subtle, silk-like Kabinett with tremendous drinking pleasure. 92/100"

  8. It’s great that there seem to be so many strong Kabi in 2017!

  9. I was thinking this morning what makes the Ellergrub so special, also in comparison to Schubertslay from Julian Haart?!

Its the balance&harmony or Buddha-like calmness which makes Ellergrub so special.

  10. Martin, one of the wines we drank yesterday was the W-K trocken 2015 from the same site. Different wine, different vintage, but very lovely indeed.

I have bought this estate from Porn in Bernkastel but I don’t recall buying any in the U.K. I’m trying to recall whether it is at Howard Ripley tastings where I have tried them here?

  11. I missed it this time, think I might have been in Nepal. A nuisance, to be sure.

  12. Good to see that several Mosel experts also praised 2017 Weiser-Künstler after they tasted the wines at the event Mythos Mosel:

    "2017 Weiser-Künstler........buy everything"

"2017 Ellergrub is one of the best Kabinett I have ever had"

  13. Rub it in.;)
My favourite producer at Mythos was Peter Lauer. Only '17s were on show (so precluded his fizz, fortunately). Every wine was very good or better. The Riesling Pornhaus didn't have any of his wines in stock. So will await their arrival at Howard Ripley.

  14. I have never tried these wines. I have voiced interest in some 2013 Ellergrub on Vinxchange. However although there doesn’t appear to be any 2017 on Howard’s site although there is some Wolfer 2017 for the nearly the same price as the wine on the forum.

No experience in this so what would people recommend the older Ellergrub or the 2017 Wolfer?

Help please as I couldn’t afford both.

    Thanks

  15. I’d probably go for the 17, the 13 might well be a bit grumpy but that’s a general thought not specific.

I’d suggest drinking three now and saving the other three for a decade or more. But don’t worry if you want to drink them all now.

  16. Yesterday I had a talk on the phone with a friend who works at the estate Dr. Loosen and she told me that she was deeply impressed by 2014 Ellergrub Kabinett and other aged Rieslings from Weiser-Künstler at the event Mythos Mosel which took place end of may.

  17. The 2015 Ellergrub Kab seems to still be available in Norway. I bought 3 2014s on recommendations here IIRC but have yet to open one of them.

  18. In this case open a bottle and tell us your impressions.

  19. Both 2014 and 2015 were on Vinxchange but have already gone. Tough one as Ellergrub seems to be very highly recommend. From both sources only 2013 available. So, 2017 Wolfer better choice than 13 Ellergrub?

  20. Maybe you're searching for older vintages of Ellergrub.

Here is a TN of the 2013 + 2015 Ellergrub by Mosel Fine Wines. I strongly recommend the free newsletters.

    2013 Weiser-Künstler "Enkircher Ellergrub" Kabinett

Harvested at a cool 83 Oechsle, this shows a superb fresh and pure nose of mint, white peach, laurel and cassis. The wine is juicy and the fruit structure seems a bit ripe on the palate with yellow peach as well as smoke. The finish is clean, zeasty and almost off-dry in taste. This is a light yet complex Kabinett which is to true to its style. 91/100

    2018-2028

    2015 Weiser-Künstler "Enkircher Ellergrub" Kabinett

"An intense yet very subtle and multi-layered nose of grapefruit, pineapple, flowers and mint leads to a delicate and precise wine on the palate. Thefruit is completely driven by minerals and the fruity only comes through in the long and smoky finish at this stage. A firm acidity makes for an almost off-dry (rather than fruity) feel in the long finish of this stylish Kabinett. 92/1000 "

    2021-2030+

Just for the record 2016 Ellergrub Kabinett was not produced and 2014 Ellergrub Kabinett received also 92/100 by Mosel Fine Wines and won the BerlinKabinettCup

  21. Duly subscribed. Thanks for the tip.
decided to go for the 2013 Ellergrub posted on Vinxchange.

  22. MFW newsletters are an invaluable resource, IMO.

  24. Bought this and the Wolfer Sonnenlay in '15 and the latter in 2016 but didn't go for any this year- perhaps this was a mistake...

  25. I had a look on Howard ripley website and the 2017 Ellergrub wasn't listed. Not sure if that was because it had all gone by the time I looked. Happy to try the 2013 to start. Definitely a break away from my usual Rhone purchases.
