We saw the Annular Eclipse in San Diego last October, which was really quite spectacular. This year's Solar Eclipse was doable out here, but not in the same class as other parts of the country.
That said, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. came to the rescue with their Hazy Cosmic Thing (8.0%) brewed especially for the Eclipse. Sierra Nevada first brewed their "Hazy" series a while back with "Hazy Little Thing" (6.7%), which proved to be so popular, that several limited edition variations followed.
Hazy Cosmic Thing featured three "cosmic" hops: Comet, Helios and Strata, plus Simcoe and Eureka hops - the end result being a delicious east-coast-style Hazy IPA with immediate flavours of pineapple, berries and mandarin oranges, with lychees coming in mid-flavours. Further notes of pine resin and herbal dankness came in at the finish with a light touch of spice at the end.
A classic from Sierra Nevada and notable for not being over-hopped, with the combination of fruit and herbal flavours really making for a beautiful IPA. A great way to enjoy the (limited) eclipse!
