A July 4th pair of Cali-Belgique beers

For July 4th celebrations over here, we've tended to pull the blinds down and fly our Union Jack (or Union Flag) outside at half mast. We couldn't do it this year as my wife put up a new flag representing her views on the current political situation.

Thus, after our morning java fix, we watched Emma Raducanu's fabulous effort against the world No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, at Wimbledon (she was soooooo close!).

Later that evening, we headed up to Stone Brewing in Escondido as they had reintroduced two of their "Cali-Belgique" style beers.

First up, was their Saison Du Buff (6.8%), a beer that was first introduced back in 2010 - A collaboration with Victory Brewing (Downingtown, Pennsylvania) and Dogfish Head Brewing (Rehoboth Beach, Delaware).

Bursting with Belgian yeast and brewed with Rosemary, Sage, Parsley and Thyme, this saison is brewed by all three breweries, using the same identical ingredients. And delicious it was too, with a lively yeasty flavour, complimented with the herbal additions.

Next, was Stone Cali-Belgique IPA (8.7%), an IPA blending California and Belgian styles. Several different versions of this beer have been brewed over the years, this particular version was aged in red wine barrels.

The aging process gave notes of fruit, tannins and oak with an added richness due to the refermentation in the barrels. This all complimented the hop profile and Belgian yeast character.

You can't miss any beer brewed with Belgian yeast and these two were classic Cali versions...well worth a celebration!
