Pure Project is the most earth-friendly, green and organic brewery by a country-mile in this region. Boasting five locations in San Diego County, we tend to gravitate to the original location in Miramar (or Beer-amar as the locals call it due to the proliferation of breweries in the area).
This particular visit began with Cosmic Dancer (7.4%), a single hop west-coast IPA, featuring Mosaic and Mosaic Cryo hops.
When I really started studying hops as I began to embrace American IPA's, I remember being really keen on Cascade hops and then when Mosaic came along, I was all over IPA's featuring this new hop.
Still hugely popular today, Mosaic hops are known for their complex and layered flavor profile, with a blend of tropical, fruity, floral, and earthy notes. It has beautiful mango, blueberry, and citrus characteristics.
For anyone's edification, the Cryo hop-style is relatively new. The official description is: Cryo hops are ultra-concentrated hop pellets produced using a cryogenic process that separates whole-leaf hops into concentrated lupulin (containing resins and aromatic oils) and bract (the leafy material) at extremely low temperatures, resulting in a more potent and efficient hop product.
So, fruity, earthy and intense! It doesn't get much better.
Next on the list was Double Dust Hazy DIPA (8.7%), their more intense version of Diamond Dust IPA. Featuring a pairing of Mosaic and Cashmere hops, this was an easy-drinking, fruity and refreshing DIPA with notes of peach, pineapple, mango and tangerines. You'd never know it was 8.7%, which to me is a sign of a well-made beer. It had a velvet body, which you can thank the Cashmere hops for. Cashmere, by its very name, is a very silky-smooth hop.
I finished up with Harvest of Riches (12.5%). A Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout with Raspberries and Vanilla. I only had a 5oz pour of this one as I enjoyed it at their Anniversary Festival in February.
It's aged for a year in a mix of Cutwater, Blanton's, and Kentucky Owl bourbon barrels before being infused with organic raspberries and vanilla beans. Rich, caramel-like, with notes of chocolate and raspberries, this is one of the best stouts they've put out in a long time.
And a fitting way to end an evening at Pure Project.
