Anyone else use empties as an ornament ?

Went through a phase of gathering memorable bottles but moved house many times in the last few years and life is too short to package up empty wine bottles.
About to move in 3 weeks. Can I justify keeping any empties? The 89 Haut Brion? 86 Mouton? 64 Krug? I'm unlikely to taste them again...
cheers,
Graeme

I had this dilemma when we moved earlier this year - I realised fairly quickly that, in the scheme of moving the entire contents of a house + an 800 (ish) bottle cellar, a small box of empty bottles was neither here nor there.

To be fair, I mostly haven't drunk anything/afforded anything so memorable that it's been worth trophy keeping... apart from our bottle of Cristal opened to celebrate the arrival of Daughter number 1. Will probably add to that with the arrival of number 2 and with a couple of really nice Burgs purchased on our recent trip over there

A new trophy last night. No room, so 1998 Bin 707, which was drunk at my 40th, has gone in the bin.

As you can see from the colour, the wine was alive and kicking. Maybe more texture than fruit, but it was full of life still. This was a half, so a full bottle might well be even better.

In the lavatory of All'Osteria Bodega in Bologna (very highly recommended to those of stout appetite) last week a wooden box that had previously contained a double magnum served as a dispenser for extra rolls of paper. Rather elegant, I thought.

I have a little shelf in the downstairs loo that has a rotating cast of significant empties, or ones with attractive labels. It feels a bit limiting so I'm planning to incorporate some shelves for empties in the study when it's redecorated soon, too.

I am quietly torchered by the scruffiness and inconsistency of the foils. The Krug is exemplary. The Flaccianello and the Chambolle are fine. The Drouhin is scruffy but it looks like you’ve just stabbed your corkscrew straight through the Palmer and ripped it out through the foil. Have some respect man!

I want my seven-year-old son to break the small number I have. They're clutter, I won't miss them, and I'll be able to present myself as a brilliant father - much better than if he breaks a Riedel or - heaven forbid - a Zalto. Or, come to that, my laptop, my new radio alarm clock after breaking the other one, my one bottle of aftershave (that I never use), or a Le Creuset that belonged to my mother. And that's before he's even gone near the Liebherr stuffed with different-shaped bottles so that one can fly out...

No I don’t keep them. What I do have are old notebooks with notes I took on wines while drinking them in the period from 1985-2002. Occasionally I would soak off the label and stick it in later. It is quite nice to look back on those.

I like this a lot. I’m wondering if I can persuade Mrs DV re our downstairs WC. She’s a fan of scalloped patterns so perhaps I propose it as a package.
