Armagnac recommendations?

Any suggestions? I vacillate around spirits. Lately I've gone back to a little Armagnac. Waitrose in the village stocks it so I have mainly been trying their 2 or sometimes 3 offerings in the £24 to £37 range. Would like to have my horizons broadened.

When I was a twenty something and clawing my way up the professional ladder, I well remember drinking quite a lot of Calvados in a couple of restaurants in Charlotte Street (London). Then I went through my Cognac period in various Relais Chateaux and luxe restaurants in France. Some very old, but never quite hit the spot or the value trigger. Armagnac hits the spot better for me.

Found Armagnac by accident in Bernard Loiseaus' superb restaurant (sad end) on our third or fourth visit, but have no idea now, years removed, what he gave us. But he sat and talked us through a few late into one night.

Not many threads on this here, and the ones the spyglass found are quite old. Would like to get some recent thoughts.

Thanks for those thoughts. I was unaware of the wine society :rolleyes:but I see they stock one I already have a bottle of and like, and I will try the other one recommended above. Will also try a Darroze offering for a treat.

I usually (with the caveat that I don’t get through more than a bottle per year at most) drink the Ch de Monbel recommended above by Richard but the one I currently have open is Chateau de Millet 1996, £59 from Yapp Brothers but currently out of stock. I’m no brandy expert but to my palate it’s very good.

OK then I will give that a try on my next purchase. Bookmarked the Somerset site. Last time I had Calvados was in Lyon at a private party in a restaurant and I felt it tasted astringent and slightly rough on my palate. Was a Pere Magloire 12 year old (already opened bottle).

I second the Darroze
Bas Armagnac from Casterede
Laubade too

and my favourite Calvados of recent years was in a Paris steak place "Le Pere Jules, 20 yr old". Not sure it is available in UK

If you fancy revisiting apple-based spirits then have a look at Somerset Cider Brandy - the 10 year old is the sweet-spot in the range IMO. Whenever I try Calvados now it compares unfavourably with the Somerset.
Interesting, I really like the Somerset stuff but was just reflecting that I'd never had a bad Calvados either.

I was given a Christmas present of the M&S 6 year old Armagnac and it is pretty decent with a lovely floral, aromatic nose, carried over in the mouthfeel, before the alcohol kicks in. Not sure how much it cost, but probably less than £40.

I don’t drink very much Calvados but it is the one spirit where I tend to prefer younger versions (VSOP or 5yo) as it has a more apple flavour than the aged versions.

With Armagnac it’s the opposite, young ones are ok but are fairly short on the finish and not very complex. For me they need to be at least 20 years old and ideally 40.
For me it's the other way around as far as calvados is concerned. The young fruity ones may be nice (and appreciated when you get them on the house in Normandy), but to be interesting they have to be at least 15 years old.
