Bordeaux EP 2023

I’ve not bought Bordeaux EP since the 2015s so am no longer in this game. And I’ve not tasted any from this vintage.

Reading the available reports it seems an average-good vintage of the likes we’ve seen many times before (01,02,04,06,08,12,14,17). Unless prices look really down not sure these will be a good buy at this point. Like those earlier vintages these are going to be available for some time and will probably end up being viewed as unheralded cellar defenders to drink while waiting for the great vintages to become ready.

four sensible merchants are offering between 646 and 660, so it seems that there is availability at that level
You can also get the 05 for just over £180 a bottle ib. So about the same price as the 2023 if you include twenty years of storage fees for something that will be as least as good, probably actually better, and ready to drink over the next twenty years. En primeur is such a mess for Bordeaux.

I have some 05 and haven’t even looked at it yet.
At 62(I know can’t believe it) why would I buy 23 that I’ll never drink!

How was this?
Younghwa and I were lucky to share this with Ian in the very civilised Trattoria della Posta just outside Monforte in Piemonte.
As has been mentioned here before, the 18 vintage in Barolo is very approachable and for the majority of wines you probably get 90% of the potential full enjoyment now so not much point rolling the aging dice. However! This was a bit different. It was enjoyable but I felt we were only getting 60 or 70% of its potential so if I had any in the cellar I’d be waiting 5 years or so to try one. It was very elegant, restrained, classic. Only thing I wasn’t keen on was a touch of noticeable alcohol on the finish (14.5% abv). It was very good though and I could get used to Tuesday lunches like this :)

I don't think I would have bought a bottle of Lafite anyway but disappointed to note that L&W have added a considerable premium to single bottle purchases. Used to be pro rata whether 1 bottle or a case, which was very welcome for occasional Burgundy or Bordeaux purchases.

Curious to know if anyone is getting interested or moving from a not buying to buying position with this level of discounts across the whole campaign?

I think at most I might make a single purchase in halves but probably unlikely and will wait for rhe 3yr mark,
