Bordeaux EP 2023

Not surprised. Troplong Mondot has been the outstanding qpr in St Emilion since the 2018 vintage and is at least as good as Canon. Jono they have dialled down the style significantly since the new owners took over as James notes. My advice is buy the 2020, which as James also notes you can pick up for under £400/6 and/or the 2018 or 2019. I have 2 x 6 packs of the 18, 19 and 20.

Notable that on the Farr Vintners website nothing is sold out in this campaign. Apart from Pichon Lalande the other wine that probably represents ok vfm is Les Carmes Haut Brion if you like that style. Perhaps Chateau Margaux as well if you play in the premier league.

Given quantities a lot of this will be to do with the negoc still having availability and once you ask you get until the negoc says “all gone!” So you can always keep requesting… but a sign that once the wines are bottled you may see “releases ex Chateau” coming to market if they remain open to requests during EP.

Granted I haven’t had any issues getting what I asked for… not that I would have bitten but the only thing I haven’t been offered was Haut Brion Blanc… I’m expecting not to get offered Petrus either… but again, I’m not gonna pay whatever they think the market thinks it’s worth.

It has an unusually high % of Cabernet Franc in the blend Antoine - in 2023 it was 50% - which tends to dominate the flavour profile. I am not the biggest fan of this property but it gets very well reviewed by the critics.

PLL and Conseillante in halves for me so far. I think that’s it
Just because I love the estates I have got some Figeac and La C but I also managed to pick up 2020s and older below this release price. Not by much but still sensible. 2010 and older seems to start to get into the “am I really willing to take the risk on someone else having stored them poorly territory” but still not a huge jump on the 23 release price.

I thought PLL, Pontet Canet, Beau Sejour Bécot and Laroque were the best values this year based on my critics selection. I like the low 13% alc of the PLL too. PLL probably the best value albeit the most expensive of the four.

Really? You can pick the 2010 up for £100 more than the 2023 ib for six. Has buying from ib storage been a problem for you in the past?

I'm still absolutely amazed that anyone is buying any 2023 even with a few properties releasing at significant discounts.

Not specifically when I know where and how things have been stored (ie my big bear with provenance which dies hard growing up around antiques where even people who know my late mother will ask me for details of things she had) No guarantees however as IB just means it’s never been taxed in the Uk. Wines do come from cellars overseas and then sold IB here.
