Buffalo Trace

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon 40% abv

I first heard of the producer when enquiring about the source of origin of Bourbon barrels in the context of the maturation of single malt whisky.

Anyway as a budget choice, this set me back under £20 at Costco, and it massively over delivers. I usually prefer my whisk(e)y at north of 45% or so, yet here there is good texture and flavour, and no fake colouring agents added (a problem with a lot of Scotch). Admittedly drinking Buffalo Trace straight is not much fun as not the kind of contemplative dram deserving of Glencairn glasses etc. Best poured over sculpted ice in a tumbler, and then it is nigh on perfect!

Really quite good and especially for the money and wide availability. Still, if in Tesco do try the Wild Turkey 101 which is indisputably fabulous.

I'm a big fan of (UK supermarket) Bourbon. I've tended to go for Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey (for the spice) or Eagle Rare 10-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (from your aforementioned Buffalo Trace) - both 45%vol. They come out in the low £20's when on special & a family CC card.

I've had that too, and like it as well, and when on offer it is a good move. If you can find the Wild Turkey 101 when it is on offer at Tesco I think it is something you should try as it has a high rye content and 101 proof.

I came at Bourbon from quite a thorough schooling in first rate single malts and have to say I like the uncomplicated and v honest nature of it. I think familiarity with smarter Bourbons is an avenue that I should really investigate at some point.
