Competitive Offers from Retailers

Typically I find it a big step, though I can see that in some vintages Viallière might be more appealing. Grand-Places is a very mineral, powerful (although not necessarily ”big”) dry, rocky sort of wine, whereas the Viallière is a more subtle, violets and sweet-fruits sort of wine. Of course these are mere characterisations rather than absolutes, but you can see why in certain vintages one might be the sort of wine that might grab someone’s fancy over the other.

Certainly at the J&B tasting last year the Viallières was definitely showing better than the G-P, but I suspect that in the long term the G-P would probably pull away. I’m assuming that was the tasting Jon’s note was based around. Our little gang did discuss the wines with him at the end of the tasting including Clusel-Roch’s wines. The other thing to remember is that at these “en-primeur” tastings the G-P will be typically be at a disadvantage as it needs longer to come together and its qualities aren’t as immediately obvious as other “lesser” wines. Having said all that at the 2022 the gap was obvious. I suspect that in a warm vintage like 2022 the Viallières might have been at a disadvantage as I got the feeling that its subtle charms might have been burnt away.

In answer to your other question I wasn’t as excited by the 2022’s as I thought I might be. I thought them a little loose and much lower in acidity than I was led to expect. The only wine that really struck me as like an old-school Cote-Rotie I suspect had been acidified. I think it’s a pretty decent vintage overall, but top notch wouldn’t be a warranted description. It reminded me a bit of 2017. The usual caveats have to apply though. These were not finished wines and were in various states of evolution.

Unfortunately Rousset’s wines were not on show and I haven’t had the opportunity to taste them anywhere yet. I adore the Picaudières when it’s on (and in fact both of the reds) but find which vintages they do well with in surprisingly difficult to predict. The 2016 straight Crozes was one of my bargain wines of the last decade and the Picaudières is looking like it’s going to be the expected step up from there.
TWS have gone to 2020 on the Rousset crozes. £17 not £20 it charged for the oos ‘18.
What you think? A good bet?

The 2018 was £17 too IIRC - at least for a while as I bought some at that price. The billy bargain was the 2017, which they bin ended at £15. Sadly I’ve drunk all mine.

Assume the last word in this sentence was an auto-correct from "months".

Very drole Tom ;) , made me smile. But, you aren't that far 'off' !

Guess this should be on the L&W thread but, when initially considering this Reserves withdrawal I had two specific delivery dates in mind, as well as the potential well aired L&W current issues. Consequently, from a mutual help point of view I contacted customer care with a list of the wines I had in mind as well as preferred delivery dates and asked what notice would work best. I was clear I was only interested in one delivery not dribs and drabs. I was advised 21 days (wasn't a surprise as in line with past experiences going back over 12 months). My dates actually were a month out (not quite 'months' ;)), readily accepted by L&W, delivery satisfactorily made by DHL. Here, ooop norf, we don't have the within M25 service offered by L&W (believe the latter was/is a pilot). Not great that one has to 'wait' but for now I can live with matters.

L&W have a sale of Italian wine (no connection). Haven’t much clue on wines from Italy, but think I have found a bargain.

I did think about buying a case and selling it on, but firstly, I never have the money available to buy 6+ and secondly, my moral compass felt it would not be the right thing to do. In any case, everything I have ever tried to make money on has failed , so possibly not what I think it is!

Anyway, I should get to the point. The wine is Quercibella Camartina 2017 and it is on sale at just over £26. Seems to be a full bottle.

Hope it is a good recco.
Sadly Mark your recommendation was too good. Just had an email from L&W saying this was a pricing mistake and that they would withdraw it. Or I can pay £49IB for a bottle "as a gesture of good will". Which is the same price as Farr & Seckford. So that's the price of good will. Hmmm...

Here we go again - currently a case (12) of Arnoux-Lachaux Pinot noir Fin 2013 Dp for £300. If I had that money available I would take a chance, but I don’t. Splitting with someone could be an option, if anyone is brave enough!

Likely an error though.

Hi Nick,
thanks for the heads up. I’m struggling to find the wine on the website. Is there a specific area
I don't think that I am allowed to post a link on this site but if you browse all wines and then click on 'On offer' in the bottom left hand corner, it should show you everything. There isn't a formal sale offer, by the look of things.

L&W (yes, them again ;)) have Day One of five days of their periodic 'Cellar Raids'. Only took a quick run through as not buying but discounts don't look too 'mega'. But, if you must have more of the likes of Screaming Eagle, Cristal et al then off you go !

Majestic have various offers e.g Bin Ends and a Sale.

Doubtless more from other merchants will be along idc.

L&W sales continue for 5 days with the discounts increasing day by day. If you really have nothing better to do you can amend the day in the URL to see what wines will be coming up.

Grabbed some Vat 1 today to open when I retire, and have earmarked various Mullineux and Alheit for later in the week.

I can’t get that to work to see what’s up tomorrow…
