Corked Rum?

Bought a bottle of Madeiran rum (Rum Agricola Da Madeira: 970 Single Cask Edition) while on the way back a few weeks ago. It's a Rum that comes well recommended, and wasn't cheap (about £100), although I've not tried it myself in the past. This bottle, though tastes odd - I'd say musty. Was wondering if it might even be corked. Is this possible/common in spirits?

Perfectly possible- a bottle of Waitrose No.1 8 year old blended whisky(a surprisingly good drink) was horrifyingly corked the other week, as though actually distilled from TCA. I think I've opened a good dozen corked spirits in my life, which I suppose may indicate that I have drunk too many.

If you still have the original stopper, you could try soaking it in a glass of water overnight to see if the effect is more obvious ...

I have known two "experts" (one bizarrely an MW who professes an expertise on Madeira) claim that Madeira is not affected by corked aromas. This, of course, is complete nonsense.

My most unusual case so far is corked Tuscan olive oil (bottled in a wine bottle with driven cork).

Late to the party here, however having had a number of the 970 single casks I expect it is much more likely how it is supposed to taste - it is a complex rum and the batch variation is substantial from those I have tried, especially if you are not used to drinking cask strength and/or agricole style rums. I have never had a bottle of rum impacted dramatically by cork taint, even old bottles which have suffered shedded and floating cork for many years.

Interesting! Will take the bottle down to a friend who is more experienced with it. Presumably it keeps for a few months once open?
