NWR Cover songs that are better than the original

Speaking of whole albums of cover versions, does anyone else remember "Ruby Trax", put together in 1992 to commemorate 40 years of the charts, it was essentially a load of late 80s/early 90s indie bands covering number 1 hits. Some absolute belters on it:

The Wedding Present - Cumberland Gap
Inspiral Carpets - Tainted love (the absolutely definitive version IMO)
Blur - Maggie May
Carter USM - Another brick in the wall
Jesus & Mary Chain - Little red rooster
The Wonder Stuff - Coz I luv you
Cud - Down down
Manic Street Preachers - Theme from MASH

Some brilliant stuff on there

Can we also please note that today is the 30th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, IMO the greatest there ever was or ever will be, and a band with some pretty great covers in their repertoire, not least the Vaselines trio of Jesus doesn't want me for a sunbeam, Molly's lips and
son of a gun.
Greatest band, annniversary or death Richard? Certainly a brave call if it's #1 (poor taste if its #3) :)

You must put that on the playlist...!

Looks great, but surely cannot compare to the majestic "Funky Junction play a tribute to Deep Purple", even printed on purple vinyl, which I still have somewhere, next to the delightful "Beatles, Bach and Bacharach go Bossa Nova".

6 music was knocking it out the park yesterday with Nirvana related covers.

My local dealer retailer advised this was long deleted but have managed to track down a copy via but not from Amaz*n.

Not to mention the truly awesome Love Buzz and of course Lake of Fire, Plateau and The Man Who Sold the World.

I keep stumbling across stunning songs he wrote, invisibly, Alex. Think he wrote a few for the Monkees. Also see: Cathy Dennis, the Bee Gees :)
Was he not one of the NY Tin Pan Alley writers (well a latter day version thereof) before he was persuaded to go out and be an artist in his own write (sic)? I think Billy Joel started the same way too.

One of my earliest tv memories….on Countdown. Seemingly every week for months….
It probably seemed longer! Bruuuuuuce all the way on this one. Preferred Greg Kihn's version of 'Growing up' though.

Edit - I checked and Greg Kihn did 'For You'. I have a horrible feeling that Alvin Stardust might have covered 'Growing Up'. Haven't got the urge to check that right now.

Speaking of whole albums of cover versions,
Jennifer Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat", anyone? Her whole album take on Leonard Cohen songs. He duetted on one song too.

A guilty pleasure was Two Rooms: the sings of Elton John. Various rock, pop and soul greats do versions of Elton classics. Not many duds at all. Jon Bon Jovi's "Levon" was a good surprises. George Michael's "Tonight" is a standout.

A very good call on Two Rooms.
Sting’s Come down in time was very fine.
If I were to choose a George cover of an Elton song it would have to be “Idol”
Photo finish in that case as to wether it betters the original.
