Food Crete 2025

That light on the Levka Ori you describe, Ian, reminds me of the line from Homer : “He who finds himself in Crete senses a mysterious presence.”

On a lighter note, regarding the barbounia, there is a Greek saying: “The cats don’t eat the red mullet heads !”

nice quote Daron :)

the cats in Marathi are so well fed they turn their nose up at fishbones...never mind the heads which as you note aren't meant for cats anyway

Indeed it amazes me how many adults I come across lacking the necessary skills to shell a prawn , are fearful of sardines/kippers and order soles off the bone. Probably why Findus existed.

Other useful resources/recommendations I know in the West of Crete

Almeida....a delightful small jewellery shop in Chania owned by 3-4 women who make relatively inexpensive items mostly from semi precious stones and silver. Worth mentioning my name as my wife has bought a lot over the years and also worth offering to pay in cash as you may well get a discount!

Just over the road from Almeida is Yo-Yo, a small clothing shop with a range of tee shirts and other bits and pieces; the designs are hand made, colourful and a fun addition to any wardrobe.

Red Jane bakery in Chania is a new discovery. Very good bread range and worth the queue.

Meeting group butchers in Platanias just outside of Chania offers an above average choice of meat and unusually for Greece that includes beef. They also have good charcuterie.

Good to see the Sahara data palms sill seem to be alive and well in Loutro. There are precious few left in southern Europe. I guess the White Mountains are too much for the dreaded weevil.

The silverwork is excellent in Chania. I hardly ever see anything I like in Europe, but I got a wonderful ring there . Not sure it's the same place, as there was only a man there when I bought it!

Avli revisited with Ray and Pip.
This place really is very good. Delightful wine recommendations and later in the meal having discussed wine at some length Ray got a tour of their cellar. The
Liatiko was an outstanding wine, 93 Eu on their list (15% discount for a cheeky take away bottle) and was reminiscent of a good chambolle musigny.
