TN Domaine Germain P&F Saint-Romain Rouge 2021

Domaine Germain P&F Saint-Romain Rouge 2021

First time visit to this domaine as I kickstarted my quest to find good value Burgundy from lesser exalted villages and producers.
Deep dark ruby red with a youthful, vibrant nose of black cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant and a background whiff of oak. Sour cherry on the initial tasting, transforming into sweeter strawberry and raspberry. The oak is there but not intrusive or dominant and provides a good balance to the vibrant fruit. The finish is clean and dominated by a nice dose of slightly off-dry tannin. Went well with roast chicken and sage and onion stuffing. A lovely wine drinking well now but should evolve over 7 or 8 years.

Google Maps, basically, which, when you zoom in comes up with names and locations of producers, and then a search on the web. Bit of a roll of the dice really but if its a failure its not too expensive. Similar with other 'lesser known' villages.

Have also used Paul's 'process' to good effect myself for some time - currently have a list of producers for potential prospecting (if I can ever get around to them/have the time to spend 'on the ground').

Just to expand slightly, I have also had good recommendations from friends, books etc. @Mark Gough recommended a gem of a producer a few miles north of Beaune this year. Eating in decent restaurants in the region is also worth doing, especially when they have a good size wine list of local producers and you can try the less familiar names/villages.

One of your recommendations up in Echevronne was very good indeed. Have visited 3 times in the last two years.

Shhhh Neil ;) . Sadly I haven't been able to visit for c3 years - if we're talking the same domaine. Lovely family - Pierre is a super chap. When I last called (2020) after my 2nd Domaine Michel Noellat vendange I was struggling with what turned out to be need for a 2021 left hip replacement (osteo-arthritis) & only Pierre was present as the rest of the family were out for the day. Despite no appointment he was very happy to spend time with me but then, seeing my limping, absolutely refused to let me carry anything to my car - not even a 6 pack which I could have carried without problem. His son in law (now the winemaker) was also excellent on my 1st visit. I just have 2 bottles of the 2018 CdNV left.

I couldnt get an appointment there during summer (and whilst a stone marten was eating my engine...you have been warned), but whilst there I would also visit Gras, up in old village and Buisson. Both excellent wines. The bistro in the village is great.
It was a toss of the coin between Gras and Germain and, after asking them to send me their tarifs, Germain was first to respond, so I booked a visit to them.
I also contacted Buisson, having visited them about 25 years ago but their prices have just gone silly (€50 for a village Saint Romain).

We are. Pierre and my father in law really hit it off (they are of a similar vintage) hopefully they'll have more of the 2022s. Not sure how the 1er crus will age but I'm not concerned.
