TN Gareth's Rhone vs South African Syrah Battle

Hmmmmmmmmmmm . Many, many times over the years people have claimed they could easily tell the difference but my Blind Challenges, and frequent smaller lunches , (where we always drink wines blind, ) show this is not the case .
I agree in the main Keith but honestly with these wines there really isn’t much point.

Don't think anyone was claiming we'd be able to identify the wines blind, but in this case the Rhone wines all had a green/savoury/funky streak that wasn't present in any of the SA ones, so attempting to avoid prejudice as to which country the wines were from would probably have been futile.

Reflecting on this dinner, one thing that struck me was I would be happy to do another dinner with the same theme and different wines sooner than later. My understanding of SA syrah definitely increased, but I also found it weirdly satisfying to be able to place N Rhone in a broader context. Once again, great theme Gareth and thank you for organising.

Oh well done, really liked the idea of this. I’ve found many of the serious SA reds just need a whole lot of time and hence I’ve not been in a position to really enjoy many until the cellar ages somewhat.
Id love to to do a Washington state or west coast flight at some point, certainly with a Cayuse involved.
