Hotels on Islay

I know the island like the back of my hand.

There is the new Ardbeg Hotel, but it’s in Port Ellen, which isn’t my favourite place to stay. The port Charlotte Hotel had an excellent reputation, but I haven’t sited there for a while. I call in for real ale.

Bridgend , my in laws didn’t like their attitude.
There is also the Jura Hotel on the adjacent island , decent throw of a cricket ball.

Location , will depend what you want probably but the whole island is very drivable.

Food whisky, crustaceans, Eagles, wild life, just ask.

Thanks David. Going by car via ferry. Still at the early stages of planning but we will want to take in 2-3 distilleries (Bunnahabhain plus a couple of others), beach walking and some wildlife like Eagles, though we aren’t serious bird watchers. As to food, more a focus on quality local produce rather than fine dining.

PM me nearer the time for specific advice

There is a butcher on the island, but think advance notice is advisable.
There is also a good/better Butchers in Lochgilphead.

Tarbert is quite nice to amble around whilst waiting for the ferry.there is nothing near the pier.

There is a fantastic source of Scallops on the island £20kg when last there.
Bunahhabhain has been going through a redevelopment and should be ready,
Coal Ila, an island distillery but 97 % of its production goes into belands.
Laphroaig is our favourite experience.

All the Malts are more expensive in situ than the Tesco on the mainland. Crazy.
The islay brewery beers have no draft outlet ,and are very expensive bottled.

Eagles are never guaranteed, but there re sites for increased chances. Not sure when you plan to go but October to March is fantastic when there are nearly 40,000 Geese there.

If you visit Jura, and intend to the nodes A to B you will need Land Rover similar.
It’s very rough towards the end going near the house where George Orwell’s 1984 was written.
