NWR new zero tolerance covid thread

It's being widely reported that a WHO report that played down the possibility of Covid originating in the Wuhan laboratory was redacted under pressure from China as the precondition for the report's publication. A Danish contributor to the report has revealed that the first draft was considerably more incriminating
Do you have a link to that Tim? I'd be interested to read the story.

And how many scientific results are quoted in the past 1.5 year! The almost intentionally confusing usage of the term 'asymptomatic' by certain media is just one example.
Of course, some 'scientists' themselves are guilty, too. I don't mean making mistake or wrong prediction kind of guilty, but even not qualified as scientist kind of guilty.

I work with a US team, and have been subjected to a delightful confetti of misused words.

My favourite:

"I'm slightly un-asymptomatic".

I am waiting for access to a quantum computing array to try and decode that one.

I don’t know what proportion of PCR tests are self administered these days but when they are what proportion are likely to yield false negatives because the person failed to do the test properly by accident and what proportion might be do deliberately the test in such a way as to try to ensure a negative result?

One study (of many)

Very depressing piece on the BBC News at 10 about the low take up of the vaccine in the US deep south and hospitals filling up...
As per my earlier post, my wife wrote a condolence message to her former boyfriend today regarding his parents. His brother is still holding on but not expected to make it. Utterly senseless and very upsetting for her as she knew these people very well.

It does seem that the decline if flattening off, the same with hospital rates and death rates. Looks like those who suggested a high level of infections with little decline or increase seem perhaps to have modelled it right. Glad we avoided the 100k plus though sadly it does not look like it will be the same as last summer where we had such a rapid fall. Not sure what this means for winter.

Hopefully, it means less people to be infected in regular flu season which was the whole idea of relaxing in july rather than later.

Interesting article in the weekend ft where various scientists admitted they had been overly pessimistic about the effect of the 19/7 relaxation for the simple reason that people had actually ignored it and continued with very limited close contact interaction. Hence, the same acientists were warning again about the risks of cases rising rapidly whenever people did start reverting to more normal levels of social interaction. In effect, all the scare mongering served to defeat the whole purpose of the relaxation ie to have an increase now rather than in the autumn.

Daughter just tested positive, having been at the Boardmasters super-spreading event (double jabbed many weeks ago). Gutted that she'll now miss the family holiday. What with Richard's family getting it, this is very common. Fortunately just cold-like symptoms.
Although now she tells us that she thinks the festival should have been cancelled, as it was obvious that no precautions were actually being taken. The assurances of the organisers were just lipservice and the people at the entries didn't even look at the vaccine status on the app. I've not had the unkindness to point out that if she thought it should have been cancelled, she should have turned around and walked out. Guess that's one of the problems with a nanny state - one loses a sense of thinking for oneself about safety matters. :-(

Just because it's not explicitly banned doesn't mean it's a good idea

I'm being called back to the office in Moorgate in September and from what I hear others are too. I would have thought that's likely to create the spread that they were planning for, perhaps a month or so later

Post holiday season will clearly be key. I was in the wharf yesterday and it was about 10% of pre-covid occupancy.

Unless I missed it there was no communication whatever to the public that this was the intention and that we should stop all precautions. It seems to me that frankness with the population is not always a bad thing, though it is perfectly understandable for people not to wish to contract what can be a pretty nasty illness with possible long term effects.

My daughter 34 was fully vaccinated and got Covid 12 days ago with quite severe symptoms (except luckily no respiratory problems). Of course, this is only one example but given she was in a crowd without mask, she probably got a high initial charge. She is now better (although I am not sure as I am many hundred miles away...)

Exactly; which is why it seemed to me so grotesquely irresponsible that so many in parliament were not wearing masks yesterday.
I'm not really sure why they were there at all.

I listened for around half an hour and all I heard was opinions that have been aired in the press for the last few days, couched in pompous rhetoric, with a smattering of party political point-scoring. Maybe I missed something, but what was the point?

Yes, what is happening is important, but what was gained by recalling parliament? And if it must be recalled, why not remotely? We seem to achieve as much (very little) in an online forum :)
