NWR new zero tolerance covid thread

Indeed. If it is recommended, as it is for the situations I suggested, it should be compulsory, which saves trouble for everyone.
I just don’t think that is workable at all Tom. Compulsory mask wearing in for example busy places is a nightmare to enforce. Would you care to elaborate on how exactly that would work in practise say for public transport and a shopping centre?

As it works in almost every other country in Europe, Gareth, and previously worked here. It is quite straightforward.
It could also be decided by government advisors that mask wearing no longer offers much benefit, in which case it is no longer suggested. It's the woolly indecisiveness of 'personal responsibility' which is such a pointless and useless compromise.

I genuinely don’t know what you mean Tom. Do you mean a simple blanked instruction on mask wearing in every situation outside of your home unless seated in a restaurant or at work? If so that’s quite different from varying prescribed mask wearing according to levels of busyness (for example).

I'm with Tom.

Other countries do it now, and we've had legislation requiring mask-wearing before over here in the past. I fail to understand why it should suddenly become so problematic.

It is also perfectly reasonable to support the principle of mask-wearing legislation, without saying precisely what the rules should be. (As far as I am concerned, anything would be better than nothing.)

* post removed as I had misunderstood what Tom was referring to as “absolutely hopeless”. Which was not myself but current government policy.

It is precisely what I have been saying all along, since August in fact.
It may yet turn out that our fourth wave was precipitated by the early removal of precautions whereas in Europe it is only happening now, in which case there may have been some advantage having the surge before the winter months, but if this was the intention I can't for the life of me see what's wrong with being clear about it. Let's hope that numbers keep going down from their current high level.

That point was certainly made by many (but not all) experts several months back.

Anybody seen more recent evidence than this on lateral flow test false negatives? Speedy Covid tests are very useful, but not conclusive | David Spiegelhalter and Anthony Masters

I ask because many of us seem to have settled into a routine of taking a LFT before social events so as not to infect others. It's certainly better than nothing but still seems to leave a fair degree of potential for non-symptomatic carriers to infect others.
Fran and I take them everyday as she get them from her practise. The info she has is that they are good at detecting high loads but not so accurate below that but that lower loads should not be as contagious as the higher ones. We’ve had two false positives in the last few months but let’s hope no false negatives! Guardian article seems to indicate the science has changed on this but this was news to Fran this morning.

No test is infallible, but LFT is a lot better than nothing and, in the light of currently available evidence, very worthwhile

1) LFT false negatives are most likely if you are not very infectious

2) In some ways LFT is better than PCR. The results are immediate, so you can isolate immediately if positive. With PCR testing you could be spreading Covid while waiting for results, or get infected soon after giving a negative swab and be spreading

The Guardian article was from March 2021 and I was hoping there'd been more data since then.

But I agree there's comfort in the idea that high viral load carriers will be spotted by LFT, and that it's mostly lower risk low viral load infections that don't get flagged.

Not sure I'm quite as sanguine about the situation but still a useful summary again of where things stand...

There was an initially reassuring piece today in which Oxford/AZ's Pollard said those in ICU are now largely the unvaccinated but reminding us that it can still kill the vaccinated old and vulnerable.

The way I read this, for those of us with aged Ps or immuno-compromised folk in our orbit, caution is very much still warranted. I wouldn't be surprised if that constituted a majority of the population. And it still isn't clear to me how to assess the odds of a false negative LFT.
