TN Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Pinot Noir 2015

Hemel en Aarde, blend of 3 of the Newton Johnson vineyards.

Pale garnet, vibrant, sappy, herby, earth, strawberry game notes. With time some spicey notes open up , allspice and thyme. Intriguing, nose that begs contemplation . Palate follows, earthy, red fruits, leather and herbs. Very fine tannins and moreish acidity. Beautiful wieght and finish. Lovely vibrant PN, and only 13%, very drinkable with the Pheasant we were eating.

Thanks for the great note which says it all really. Had this earlier in the year and hugely enjoyed it too. Thought it might be at peak and very impressive especially as it sits below the Windansea and the Seadragon in the pecking order. For me, one of the best PN producers outside Burgundy.

Southend is made from the fruit farmed over the road by their neighbour. It’s nice but not as elegant as their own imo.

Stephen.. for the PN, do you prefer the family blend more than the individual vineyards? I definitely do!

I think I do, its a while since we were there for a tasting (2016) and back then they were also bottling another single vineyard PN (Mrs P??). I have some of the single vineyard wines from the 2015 , so will get some up from the cellar and try them soon. I do remember the Seadragon and Windansea showing very different characteristics and showing their terroir, but this blend really is singing right now

Great to hear the 15 vintage family PN is singing, Stephen. I know that Gordy used the best fruit from the Seadragon vineyard for his maiden CWG release that year (with picking done at 4am using head torches). It‘s one of my favourites but family PN is just so consistently good - as is the family Chardonnay as Keith mentioned. The latest release 22 family Chardonnay is particularly enjoyable as well - a great sundowner enjoyed in our accommodation looking across to the Newton Johnson farm last week.

I’m with you on that Jason. Tried and enjoyed the Family Vineyards Pinot at the winery and bought a bottle of Windansea to take home as we thought it would be even better. Much preferred the Family wine.
