Supermarket promotions Q2 2024

What to expect this quarter in England and Wales

Last year Waitrose, Sainsbury and Tesco all ran 25% off 6+ for two weeks covering end of April/ beginning of May. That covered the extended weekend for the coronation so may not be repeated. The Waitrose promotion was an addition to their normal cycle in 2023 so is rather less certain than the others. If there is no Waitrose promotion, the next is likely to be end August

Past form indicates that both Sainsbury and Tesco will also have 25% off 6+ for the end of May bank holiday and again at the end of June.

I don't really follow Asda and Morrisons as their ranges are typically of less interest. Asda seem to have started matching Tesco dates although their promotions often exclude Champagne.

Sainsbury and Morrisons currently have 25% off 3+ of the TTD/Best ranges respectively.
The Paul Mas Languedoc blanc from JS is reliable and comes out at about £6.50.

Costco - online only, ending tomorrow (7 April)
There are a few chunky reductions on some own label US wines - eg Rutherford (Napa) £22 down to £15 including delivery. I've no experience of any of these but own label other ranges are generally pretty good quality and value.
Also CVNE Gran Reserva Rioja (unspecified vintage) in a twin pack with a decanter looks good value at £24.99.

Not in store - if you have a membership, online can be added at no extra cost.

If it's their generic label, caveat emptor. I purchased the '11 a few years ago & it subsequently achieved 'dud of the year' status. Other bottles tried & utilsed as cooking wine, So not utter dross.

Just broke my moratorium for a case of Clusel Roch CR and some heavily reduced Canaries wines to try from J&B. I don't think I need ordinary Bourgogne at stupidlol price when decent Cote Rotie is under £30 a bottle all in!
My basket was doing the hokey cokey this morning (the early hours UK) as I dithered and dallied.

In the end I went the other way a bit and bought the Chevillon NSG VV (gleefully a whole dozen), Cantemerle '14 in halves to keep the munition bunker fully loaded and Cos '20 because that was quite some reduction on a very top wine.

I was so tempted with all those super low lots but I bought some last time (including Clusel Roch!) and when will I ever drink them and sure they will be back. Will be super interested in any notes on the Spanish wines.

A longstanding moratorium on champagne (in the last five years I've probably bought as many bottles) came a right cropper in M&S earlier this afternoon, when combined clearance and volume discounts dragged Louis Roederer 'Collection 244' down to a respectable £33 a bottle – now for an occasion to warrant drinking it...

The clearance on the 244 appears to be store specific. Scanning at the full £55 elsewhere.

Palmer,Ellner,Lanson,Piper all reduced in my local Simply M&S food branch
I think the Palmer BdB ends up at £27 after the double dip.
Weirdly I passed.
I think I have enough sub £50 champagne to get through the next few Christmas’s which is when I think to drink NV with a few years bottle age.
May weaken when I next visit as Palmer BdB is always a single Vintage though not branded as such.

I should know better, Ray but having drawn a blank in Bromley main large store drove to Beckenham Simply Foods and also nada!

TWS (yeah, they aren't a supermarket, couldn't find the relevant thread) have announced their Spring sale, this morning. Plenty of merit at sensible prices. I had my eye on a Gauby, sod's law it was the only cuvée not discounted but purchased it anyway.

I'd presumed the discount allowed my local M&S to clear stock in store, but they've since received two more deliveries – I've gone from abject champagne poverty to having enough for a sizeable family occasion this summer...

Supermarket auto replenishment can be a weird and wonderful science.
I recall in the case(s) of Rare 1990, Clos des Goisses 1996 and Dom Perignon 1999 a return to the scene of the crime a week later repayed one's loyalty to Tesco in spades
