Tavel

Prompted by this thread I recently picked up a bottle of Domaine Maby’s Tavel Libiamo ‘22 which I plan to drink this weekend.

It made me wonder when I last had a bottle of Tavel. Nothing in my cellartracker notes so I went back to my old notebooks and was shocked to find only one note, a Mommesin ’82 drunk in 1985!
Drinking this now. Very nice, redcurrants, rosehips, hints of raspberry and light herbs. Big for a rosé. I agree with Tom it needs to be at cellar rather than fridge temperature to show its best. 91.

It went well with pan fried sea bream bought this morning from Leicester market, braised fennel and a combination of tomato sauce and tapenade that I took from Olney’s Lulu’s Provençal Table book.

Well that decides it then. I’ve got one in my cellar, I’m going to pull it out and put it in my fridge for a BBQ this afternoon. :)

I like the Maby wines I’ve had from TWS and they are always gratefully received by others when taken to dinner.

I was passing Tavel last week - conveniently close to an Autoroute exit. Decided to pay an impromptu call on Maby (Hachette says it is open for visits).

It’s caveau was closed, with the suggestion on the door that their wines can be tasted in the village at the Caveau de Saint Vincent.

The caveau represents a number of producers in the appellation. Sadly the sign outside indicated that it has closed permanently! A sign that the Tavel brand is on the decline?

Happily the local Co-op came to the rescue with a range of Tavel wines, some organic.

I note that JL-L rates the 2023 Maby Prima Donna very highly, much more highly than usual in fact, with five stars. TWS currently have it for £14.50. I last bought the 2019 for £12.50 so this isn't as terrible as it could be. I've bought a case to start on next year, and the mere act of placing it in Reserves has mentally transported me out of this miserable cold and grey climate and instead I'm sitting in a warm dappled garden eating strong Mediterranean food. A rare case of wine having a positive mood impact several months before you've even opened it.

Totally missed this - but I've been persuaded to start bringing a Tavel over - mainly because I and my team want to drink it.. but pleased to see it mentioned here. If Tesco now has one and it does ok - then is there a tide to be turned on pale rose that might as well be Veneto Pinot Grigio bianco (rhetorical question we all know that isn't happening but we can dream!)

A bottle of the Maby Libiamo 23 was weirdly unsatisfactory a couple of weeks back, indeed I don't know whether or not it was a bad bottle, certainly the first Tavel I've opened that I didn't enjoy. The Tesco one is very good indeed.

Has anyone tried the Maison Sinnae Les Cigalieres newly stocked by Waitrose? i think it's a respectable source but the very untraditional mere 13% stated alcohol makes me wonder whether it is made to a duty point.

Yes. Assuming we are talking about the same rose. Just one glass, as an aperitif, alongside a rose Rioja oddly enough. Last week. Was not purchased in the new 25% offer and was £13 I was told. My private reaction was that it was tad nondescript. Pleasant. A Rhône blend and had I focussed properly I would still have struggled to identify grape varieties or region (which may well say more about me).

I was fond of Domaine de la Morderee's Prima Donna- the last bottle I had was 15% alcohol but didn't taste like it . Fortunately, it was shared amongst four so any treacherous effects as AJ Liebling recalled Waverley Root describing it as was mitigated . Tavel is definitely only to be drunk with food IMO.
