Solid one - captured at the Rambler’s Rest in Chislehurst, a charming, dog friendly pub that on a day like today can almost make you feel like you’re in deepest Sussex.

The best of the handful of SE London samples I’ve had this year @ the Railway Tavern, Bromley. Don’t know whether Jack Carter would have approved of the mugware but it seems to be de rigueur in Antic pubs

Finally got to The Railway on Thursday for a few Landlords... Awesome. Much as I appreciated the reduced air resistance as the dimpled welly moved from table to lip, I prefer the straight glass...

The Nag's Head in Walthamstow village in NE London does a pretty good pint. They are proud of it.

Carpenters Arms, Whitfield St W1 - tasted ok but a touch over-vented, a classical example of Landlord when merely competent not great. Keg choice was Neck Oil. Wasn’t tempted to linger, in any case the only standing room was by a table with a chalked notice saying “Reserved for Soozie @ 6.30”. Vibrant crowd, some wearing antlers.

Apropos beer not travelling well from its home, I think you also need to throw into the mix the use (or non-use) of a sparkler with cask ales to create the creamy head. It’s definitely a north/south thing and I think the fact that it doesn’t tend to get used so much down south adds to the perception that northern beers don’t travel well.

Three Compasses in Farringdon served me a couple of very nice pints of Landlord this week. The bar menu is excellent. We ordered the whole menu. Bouchon Racine upstairs with Henry Harris in the kitchen is fantastic too.

The Shortlands Tavern has a named Stammtisch (“Muppets’ Corner”) at which the noted prawns appeared to be being degusted in quantities and, overall, is a charming battlecruiser which fully lived up to the promise in its review.

The Devereux in Temple. Base flavour is ok but the cask has been over-vented in the old-fashioned London manner. Perhaps the local barristers prefer it that way.

Back at the Jolly Woodman last night, always feel I should try the Harvey's when I'm there and each time wish I'd stuck with the Landlord!
Our second stop at The Star and Garter in Bromley saw a few different bits.
Was expecting more of the Kernel. Nice enough but a bit subdued and not quite what I expect from Citra Hops...
The Verdant beer was a blast. Very irreverent but a fun final sup of the evening. Very light bright and grapefuity.

The BWC Christmas visit to the JW was marvellous last night, although we shivered through the first few in the outdoor area at the back. When there was room at the inn we came indoors for the last couple. Both the Landlord and the Harvey's Best were very well received.

According to the pump clip, this pub is a member of the Timothy Taylor “Champion Club”. I don’t know what you have to do to earn such accreditation because the pint was a little way way off, Soda-Stream sweetish and inaccurate London conditioning as per illustration below.
It’s a genial enough battlecruiser though, mixed clientele, some still wearing their office security passes on lanyards, Ronnie O’Sullivan on a small telly in the corner, outdoor picnic tables overlooking Queen Square and handily located for the estimable Xi’An biangbiang noodles at Master Wei next door.
