If you are there for the first time, the regular tourist program is more ore less mandatory. The museums are pretty amazing, if you are into these kind of things. More details if needed. Choice of restaurants is huge. The link I posted above is giving reliable advice.

We were there in early June for the umpteenth time.

I would agree re Glacis Beisl (or Zum Friedensrichter) for Schnitzel.
Heunisch und Erben does very good food and has a spectacular wine list at a reasonable price.
If you fancy something different Pizza Mari is great, but book or you will have a long wait.
If you fancy checking out the Austrian natural wine scene then Vinifero on Karmeliterplatz is a nice spot
And if it is unbearably hot then you can go to the beach. My favourite is Strandbad Alte Donau on Arbeiterstrandbadstrasse (U1 to Alte Donau then out of the station and turn right, 2 minutes walk)
