Bodega Garzón, Albariño 2013, Uruguay
Over the past decade the Albariño grape variety has become familar to UK wine drinkers. The vast majority of examples come from the cool northwest Atlantic coast
of Spain (or from northern Portugal where the grape is known as Alvarinho). This one comes from a perhaps unexpected source: Uruguay. But when you consider the details of the wine it is not so surprising: the vineyards lie close to Uruguay’s own Atlantic coast, and the country has a sizeable wine industry. This wine is made by consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini, and has a burst of salt-licked minerals, classic apple and citrus, but there’s also a riper peach character than in many Spanish examples. On the palate there’s a sweet edge of tropical fruit, but just enough acidity to add cut to the broad stone fruit juiciness, that citrus and saline acidity adding cleansing finesse to the finish. £14.25 from Turton Wines, but if you want to buy a pack of six, the price is only £10.99 per bottle from Ministry of Drinks.
