Cloudy Bay, Chardonnay 2022
Marlborough, New Zealand, Dry White, Screwcap, 13.0% abv(2024) A blend of fruit from the warmer soils of the Wairau Valley and cool, dense clay of the Southern Valley, this was fermented with wild yeast in French oak barriques and matured for eleven months. Oak seems restrained this vintage to very nice effect, just a sheen of buttered toast and oatmeal over pear and lime fruit. The palate has textural richness, hinting at exotic nectarine and mango, but that balanced by fresh, zippy lemon acidity. The majestic 'mixed six' price of £28.49 is the one to be on. Independent merchants also have it for £30 - £33. Watch the video for more information.
Terrazas de los Andes, Organic Malbec 2022
Mendoza, Argentina, Dry Red, DIAM, 14.0% abv(2024) The first release of an organic certified Malbec from this producer, the wine aged in oak barrels for 12 months. A proportion was kept in tank to enhance fruit freshness. It's a vivid purple, aromatic Malbec, violet, caraway and and almost strawberry-like lift to the fruit aromas, oak in the background. The palate is dry and savoury, the tannins have enough sandy grip and texture, acidity is moderate but present and the black fruit sits nicely in the long, spicy finish. (2024) If you have tried Noval's LBV before you are in for a treat: unflitered and aged five years in casks, the fruit (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Sousão) comes from their own vineyard and is trodden by foot in traditional lagares. It has a heavenly nose, spices and intense floral and dried fruit notes combine with juicier blueberry and a hint of dark cocoa. The palate is powerful and structured, framed by powdery tannins but abundantly sweet with 90g/l of residual sugar it seems endlessly long. This will also cellar for a decade or more.
